Right now, this is a motion before the House of Commons to condemn racism and religious discrimination and conduct a study into religious based hate crimes in Canada with specific attention paid to Islamophobia. These types of motions do not change laws if they’re passed; they go to a standing committee for study. The standing committee will send recommendations back to the House of Commons for consideration. Governments accept or ignore those recommendations almost equally. We don’t know yet what direction this Liberal Government will take on this issue. It is very important for all of us to hear the thoughts of Canadians on this topic.
I and my colleagues believe Canada must stand firmly behind the principles of religious freedom; that is that people be allowed to believe as they choose, to be allowed to change that belief if they choose and that they practice that belief as they choose, without any element of coercion or threat.
I, along with my Conservative colleagues, also condemn, in the strongest of terms, any hateful acts committed against religious communities, including places of worship. Religious freedom is a cherished right in Canada where Canadians can freely practice their faith without fear of intimidations, coercion or violence.
Along with religious freedom comes freedom of expression. Canadians value their ability to speak freely and that needs to be protected unless there is an element of physical threat or violence present in the message. We must preserve our ability to question the decisions and words of our leaders – including religious leaders.
You raise some good points, and I always appreciate your input. As Conservatives we have suggested some amendments to the motion, but thus far our efforts have fallen on deaf ears.
If the motion comes for its next reading as is, I will be voting against it.
