I used to work for Bao Steel for 4 years.

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Well, Bao Steel is a quite good company compared with other big state-owned companies.

I would say, working for Bao Steel gave me more rewards than working here now for Canadian companies. It's not a issue of money... Simply you will feel better that you work for your country and for your people.

There are some problems with Bao Steel though, I think. One thing very bad is that they had very severe corruption problems, especially in higher management level and external-trading departments. This problem can be contributed to that Bao Steel has loose control or no control either from the central government or the local Shanghai government. Another problem is that at Bao Steel they care about the production, the quality, the profits, but not the people. Every year Bao Steel hires hundreds of excellent college graduates from the top universities throughout the nation, but most of them will be likely doing stuff like monitoring gauges and electronic displays. There is no real chance of career development. The last thing I want to mention is that Bao Steel will not so competitive in the after-WTO world market. The only advantages they have now are the lower labour cost and government protection. At the technical side, they just bought everything from foreign countries. Departmental collaboration is nothing more than meetings and phone-calls. Even when I was last working there in 1999, nobody in my department has his own corporate email address, which was Bao Steel's largest I.T. department.

There is still a long way to go for Bao Steel and other Chinese state-owned companies. It was a great chance to do something great there for the country, but the reality just made me desperate after the early stage passion disappeared. Things just simply didn't work as the way I thought how they should work.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
