second, there is less and less household work/duty/responsility now -- no need for a full-time dedicated house-person(wife or husband alike). the number of children in a household keeps droping. you rarely see a family with more than 3 kids now. and a lot of household work can be performed by people outside the house.
and the last but not the lesat one, the high divorce rate. with more than 50% of the population getting out of bad or nonfunctionaly marriage the odds of you become part of the statistics are quite high. you need as much protection as possible.
