本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛First of all, I want to thank everyone who showed up at Zhao Wei’s memorial service
yesterday afternoon.

It’s the first time I have ever organized such events and in such short time frame, so
there were mistakes being made and lessons to be learned. I have informed but not
expected most of them. I was very surprised when I found all the local media showing up
on site (Vancouver Sun, Province, CTV, BCTV, CityTV, Singtao, Mingpao, Fairchild, CKNW,
News1130).

At the beginning, it was quite chaotic trying to have everything set up in front of all
the local Medias. With the help of the volunteers, the memorial service was set up
before the scheduled start time.

It was nerve wracking experience to speak in front of all these media people. I tried
to emphasis on two points to the reporter I talked to:
1, this tragedy hurt us all
2, Chinese have to stay united, help each other and make our concern to be
heard.

There are about 200 people (may be less) showed up between 3Pm to 5PM. I do wish there
is more Chinese attending the memorial service, however I don’t consider the event is
a failure. The service was wrapped up on 5PM.

At the beginning of the service, there is a caucasian lady yelling things such as “
you should not be allowed to come here”, etc. That is exactly the reason why we have
to stay together to confront the things like this.

Burnaby MLA Richard Lee was at the memorial service and I had brief talk with him. I
told him straight forward that while I appreciated his coming, I felt he, as a
politician, could do more for Zhao Wei. I told him (and any other Chinese-Canadian
politician) that they have to stand up and speak for our concerns, besides just ask we
vote for them during the election time. If they call them the leaders of Chinese
community then they’d better show some of the leadership. (I hope all Chinese-Canadian
politicians can hear this).

Again,
Thanks everyone who participate the memorial service.
Thanks all the support and help from Van Students.
Thanks the encouragement and help from Allen.
Thanks “fish ear” standing in the cold for 2 hours with thin jacket.
Thanks all the people talking to me and encouraging me to do more (I will let you know
what I want to do soon).

Let’s hope

Whoever is responsible for her death will be brought to justice soon.
Her tragedy will never be forgotten.
We will never have such memorial service ever again.
We stay united to face all the challenge together.
