If you want to save money, it is better off you use two full length wide plank laminate so you don't need to cut them in the middle. Then you cap it with metal strip.

Why do I buy the treads? if I want, I can make it out of any wood and I am sure it is even better than the mass-produced treads. The point is, I just did not want to buy it as you suggested.
