  • 工作学习 / IT杂谈 / jabber,you are a very warm_hearted guy!can you give me some advice.......
I am a bechelor in computer ,I am now applying immigration to Canada.
I have learned some C and C++,and I have worked with that for nearly 6 years in astate_owned corporation, I waste much time and have no experience on large project
    .
From May this year,I went to a E_Commerce corp.,now I learn some thing about html, javascript, asp, and use them in the work.
I want to learn VB and JAVA before I left China, but I don't know whether I can do so many thing. And I have little experience on large project ,how to write my Resume.
What do you think my life like? Can you give me some advice?
I will talk to you often,I think you can give me much help.
My english is not very well, can you understand me well?
    • Yes, I have understood you
I don't you need to learn VB. You are a C++ guy. It is a good idea for you to master Java.
      Java guys get better paid.
Yes, HTML and Javascript are useful skills.

Each person has limited time and energy.
You had better focus on some fields. I suggest you give VB and ASP. I encourage to
      learn Java, javascript, Java servlet...
      • jabber, thanks.how long should I take to learn java from the beginning......
Now I have bought the chinese version "thinking in java".What the most important thing I should do?
        • The first mistake you made is to buy a Chinese Java book
Please do not use any Chinese computer books. If you try to understand Java in Chinese, you will be in troublle once you arrive in Canada.

If you work very hard and cleverly, you can
master Java basics within 3-6 months. However, that's not enough. To become a Java programmer, you need to master at least one database system. In addition, you need to master HTML and at least one Web server. Not all the people can learn these things by themselves. Anyway, you may first try to learn Java basics.

Learning Java does not mean reading and understanding Java books. One needs to
set up working environment and type, compile, and execute code.

By the way, I strongly suggest you download
          Thinking in Java from www.bruceeckel.com.
Picth your Chinese computer books in the trash can.--- Sorry for my rude advice.
          • Maybe you are right.....
yes I think you are right.I have download the verson 2 "Thinking in java" and the related source.
But I have a new question,What platform I should take ,the Visual J++ or the JDK.I download a JDK 1.1.7 but it do not work, why?
Which one are you using when you learn and use the java? The OS I used is WINDOWS 2000.

communicate with jabber, please register and login. Thank you for your co-operation.

              2) Your using of "maybe" is wrong. Actually,
you agreed with me. Chinese guys like to use "Maybe", but this word means fifty-fifty.

              3) Forget about J++. You should download
              JDK1.2.2 for JDK1.3.

              4) Windows 2000 is a good platform.

              5) Set PATH and CLASSPATH correctly,
              your JDK will work.

              6) Say again, I won't answer any postings from "guest".
              • I have registered.
Yes you are right, where can I download the JDK1.3?
                • java.sun.com
Don't you know which company invented the Java language?
            • my experience on C,html,vbsript ,Java,Vb
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I have the Power J3.5 and Vb6.0 in my pc.Some Java guy suggest me to use it.They think it is wonderful and I think mastering Java is easier than mastering Dephy, more difficult than mastering VB.
7 year ago, I use C to creat some small program about loop at the work .When I navigate to internet in 1994,I begin to creat my and my company homepage. At the begining of making homepage,I studied some Vbscript for homepage. when I met Java,I drop the Vbscript and try to read the Java book 4 years ago,but after I started for 1 week on "hello world",the simple program, I fail to continue. at that time I studied Java to creat the Java applet to make my homepage more vividly.however,Because the homepage with Java is very slow and complex Java make me give up the lovely and hateful Java.I had retired for 3 years in program field before I applyed to immigrate to Canada in 2000.I have the same problem with you. I am worred and hesitate to chose all of thing such as "to ....and not to....".I hope to discuss about that.thank Jabber for the kind reply.I guess that answering my stupid question must take you value time.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
              • I did not see your question
If your VB is good, you should be able to get a job provided your English is fluent.

I don't encourage all the people to leran Java. Of course, Java can bring one a high pay.

As for Delphi, I have nothing to say.
          • Jabber, Do I qualify for learning Java.
            Hi, Jabar

I read your comments to others which are very helpful and very truthful. So I would like to bother you for my problems.

I just got a verbal permission for immigrating to Canada. My major is foreign trade English, worked for 10 years in different fields. I know that my major and work experiences won't help me to get a good job in Canada. Plus I like computer and networks. I wish that I could learn one of the subject of computer that could enable me to get a job there. According to my research, MCSE, C++, Java could be my choices... But I don't know, without a computer backgound (certificate/degree), could I learn these sort of courses and pass. and which one should I learn. Or if you have other suggestions to me, I will be very grateful.
            • Among others, forget about MCSE
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Nothing is impossible for a willing heart. Nobody was born to be a programmer.
In Washington DC, there is a computer college. Its students have disparate backgrounds. Graduate from Arabian lanaguge of Peking University, Singer from
Chinese Music University, just name a few.
Spouses of most Chinese students in USA
chose to learn computer science. They
go to some College to get a degree. So far,
It seems none of them failed in getting a job.

As I landed in Toronto, one of my students'
brother-in-law hosted me. By training, he is a
businessman. After some self-training, however, he has become a Java programmer. He is appreciated by his boss and his salary has increased from 36K to 46K within 6 months.

The issue is whether you are determined.
In addition, it depends if you can teach yourself. If you cannot, you need go to school
              to benifit from teacher's expertise.

Certificate cna help you, but it is not enough
for job hunting. I son't suggest you take MCSE. It will cost you a lot of money but
does not help you much. There is an overproduction of MSCEs.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
              • Thanks.
Thank you very much for your comments. I've got some other questions. Sorry to bother you with all these to-be immigrant problems.

                1. Do I need to get a college certificate/degree for finding a IT job? A certificate of a Java Training Class in Toronto or Montreal will be enought for me to find a IT job? How long usually such training courses take?

                2. What's the basic knowledge/prerequisit courses I should learn before starting Java.

                3. I will probably stay in Beijing for 1.5 years before I will definitely move to Canada. What preparation you think that I should do to meet the Canadian job market needs?

Many many thanks for whatever advices from you.
                • Certificates issued by training centers are bullshit
Don't count on training center. Training courses may help you, but cannot save you.

English is desparately important. Hope you don't ingore this.

I do Java training. Some of my students has no computer background but they succeeded. Some of them hold degrees in computer science but I found they are as stupid as geese.
I don't think one needs any requirements. But I believe
one must have a sense in what id going to do.
                  • Many thanks.
I understand. So I do not want to waste my time to get a college certificate, at least 1.5 years, before landing Canada. I want to use the precious time here in China to prepare the most useful knowledge for getting a job soon after landing.

So, could you give me some suggestions on how I should start with. Does your training class provide long-distance training through internet?

                    Many thanks for your help!
                    • I have not yet begun my own training business
                      Dear Sharon,

Thank you for your interests in my training. Unfortunately, I could not help you with this matter because you are still in China. Training is not simply explain some concepts to people.

If you are really determined to get on IT track,
I suggest you seeking help from people around you. Of course, I strongly suggest you visit this site and try to understand what people are discussing here. Many chatters here are professional programmers. Know what they are talking about can help you a lot.

Sorry again, I cannot help you start with sth. The physical distance between us is the essential reason. I don't want to mislead you.

                      Good luck.
