  • 工作学习 / IT杂谈 / I don't know why Java.JSP should be a programmer's top chioce. I'm skillful in php(asp)+oracle(sybase),flash.photoshop etc,If i immigrate to canada.How long can i find a suitable job? very grateful.
    • Although you are an expert, your question is not so professional.
      本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Lazy_cat,

I think you have some true skills. However, no one can tell you how long it will take you to get a job. My boss hired a VC++ expert from Shanghai, but his guy has been still on bench for more than 2 months. Though I am not a C++ veteran, I can judge he is a true C++ expert. He has been pissed off more than 20 times by our clients. Now he has developed a very strong prejudice towards Java guys. He thinks this world is unfair to him... His reason is that few people can become a C++ expert. Why should those Java guys be so hot? In his eyes, Java is a langauge for kids, its performance is poor,
people should not use it, .... but who would like to listen to his voice?

Of course, ASP (and other Microsoft technologies) still share a big part of the market. Some people prefer to Microsoft solutions. However, behind Java is a strong stream of industry momentum. I personally hope we do not have any prejudice towards any technologies even we don't like them.
Prejudice can casue nagative impact to our carrers.

You may find a job in Canada using your present skills. Please be advised that php and asp are just scripting langauges and they don't weigh as much as you think. Flash and PhotoShop are tools for graphic experts. Most projects have a graphic person so you are not asked to design graphic stuff.
If your resume falls into my hands, I will be interested in your DB skills.

In one word, I think your skill set is not very attractive. But you may find a job if you are good at promoting yourself.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
      • I'm sorry.there may be a little misapprehend.
Think you for your kind advice.Sorry for the
story of that C++ expert. I believe he will do much better in software's company like
Microsoft or adapt himself to suit to present occupation.

I do not have any prejudice towards JAVA,My main occupation is DBA.Oracle.Sybase),develop tools is Powerbuild
Both have years experience.Constructing Web-site is my second occupation.
only 2 years experience. When i view the articles of this forum.
All the things they are discussing are JAVA.JAVA..I start to puzzle
because in China seldom people will construct his Web-site with JSP.
I always believe PHP Should be hotest Web-cgi in North America
        originally.it's made me desponding.

You are very kind and reliable.Could you tell me whether JAVA has
bright future? I'm 28 age,It's enough time to become a member of JAVA guys.
But i do not want to be informed that JAVA is becoming history after i'm
        skillful.

        Thanks again for your reply.
        • Since you are DBA, I hope you can contribute more to our discussion
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Let me introduce an English word to you: hype. What is a hype? I give you an example.
Many, many Chinese immigrants in Toronto are learning Java, regardless of their own interests and backgrounds. Most of them learn Java simply because they heard that It is easy for Java guys to get a job. This is kind of hype. Our discussion is definitely influenced by this hype.

Since you are a DBA, it is not compulsory for you to learn Java. Of course, knowing some Java is a big plus for DBA. A good DBA in Oracle or DB2 can earn top dollars, too.

This site was built by Sailor using PHP. PHP is an open source technology. It is techincally good. But you cannot hope that any serious
commercial sites will be built using open source technology. Your DBA skills weighs much heavily than your PHP skills.

Since you are an Oracle DBA, could you tell us what factors can cause a failover in migration from Oracle 7 to 8i? I am no DB guru, but I have ever explained this question as I played a role of rerefee for one of my former classmates. If you can list the possible reasons for a migration failure,
I think many of us will be enlightened.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
          • Oracle Migration
On this issue we can discuss to the extent of even a whole book.

You can try some tools available:
            Oracle Migration Workbench
            Embarcadero DBArtisan
            PowerDesigner

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I did job references for one of my former classmates 3 times within two weeks.

At that time, my old classmate was still a chemist, earning 55K annually. But she was nearing to success in changing her job.

Each time I got a call for her sake, I always told the following story: I myself was an independent consultant in Maryland. I was involved in an E-commerce system last year.
For some reasons, we need to migrate a DB from Oracle 7.3.4 to Oracle 8i. At the very beginning, our DBA guaranteed no problem.
Unfortunately, we got stuck very soon. In such a case, I recommended my friend to our project manager. At my insistance, we had my friend come in at weekend. She spent half a day with us. After some work, she pointed out the reason why our migration failed. 1) init.ora (for Initialization) file was not set up properly; 2) system tablespace was too small; 3) we forgot to delete Oracle 7 service before creating Oracle 8 service (We worked on Windows machine). Following my friend's prescription, we finished our DB migration because our project due date.

Let me remind you that I was telling lies. Of course, I told lies at my old friend's instruction. I was very happy to do that because I know she was so good. After 2 weeks, she called me and told me she accepted an offer of 60K. Though the new salary is not much higher than hers as a chemist, she was satisfied because she
understood she needed a transition time.

From this story, you may get a sense about what a good job reference should be. Some people like to get their closest friends as job referees. This is not always a good idea. The most important thing is that your referee should be quite technical. If your referee just say you are smart, you work very hard, you are easy-going, .... it does not make much sense.

Now let me tell my friend's story. How did she become an Oracle DBA? She thought she is not a very aggresive person. So she chose Oracle DBA as her direction. She spent about $5000 USD in taking various courses in some computer training center. She spent 1 year on this. At the same time, she bought 3 computers and established a network at home. She has one Linux invironment and one Windows invironment. She tried to do all things she though necessary. For instance, she though she needed to know Windows machine well, you learn to install Windows 95, 98, NT in the evening. As I talked her on the phone, I was astonished at her talking---her talking was so professional.
For instance, she could clearly explain Primary Domain Controller, NTFS, DHCP....
She could tell me what useful packages one can find in Red Hat Linux... She clearly told me Oracle Form is trivial... Knowing form is not enough for job hunting. She could systematically told me what Developer 2000 is for. To gather experieces, she really created a small DB using Oracle 7.3.4 and then migrated to Oracle 8i.

The point in this story is: No pain, no gain.
Some poeple always asked me: Can I got a Java job after I finish reading <<Thinking in Java>>? Frankly speaking, the answer is no
unless the employer is your friend.

Just FYH: my classmate's salary is now 75K.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
              • Good point! Sometimes you have to 'lie' in order to get into a new profession, given that you are comfortable with what you are expected from work.

    • forget about your php,asp skill, try to learn either java or .net, I found many people got job with .net this year.
    • Never put Oracle (Sybase), flash and photoshop together when you apply DBA job
PHP and ASP are all valuable skills to you although they sound easier than Java, C++… you may survive on them one day :)
I had years’ C++ experience before coming Canada, but I got a job by my PL/SQL skill (I believe most of people think it is pretty easy). Now I am a Java developer. So my point is: your every skill is useful to you, it may lead you to the first job here.

Note no matter what your skill is, good luck is necessary.

      Cheers

      • As I know the Internet Applications haven't become the core applications for enterprise
At enterprise level the core systems are still those on Mainframe or AS/400. Most internet application in those company are acting as a channel, but this channel is more and more important and ocupying more and more IT budget.
        • thanks for the explanation ^_^
    • MARKET!
