  • 工作学习 / English / Jabber's English Note---007
If we think that improving our language skill can enhance our life quality, learning English is no longer a torture. Instead, it can be a lot of fun.

Building our vocabulary is extremely important. Otherwise, it is almost impossible to understand other's talk. For instance, we need to know store's names as many as possible.

Here are some store names: Home Depot, Office Depot, Toys Depot. I am not sure all the new immigrants can pronunciate "Depot" correctly.
The word "depot" seems to originate from French, so the last letter "t" is dumb. In passing, I note that the word "restaurant" is a French word.
    • Thanks. Keep posting! Yes, in French, the 'e+'' in depot and restaurant pronounce as [ei]. Lot's of English words can find substitutes in French. It's really interesting.
      • The Anglo-saxon language, namely English, is originated from German, which is a main branch of Latin, French is developed directly from Latin, thus the English and French are not related lingustically speakly
      • I can't spell, I meant Lingustically speaking
    • Addendum: "buffet" and "debut" are French words, too. So the letter "t" is dumb.
    • You can say that again. Many words from Franch like fiance, and I found my pronociation of depot is wrong. Thanks.
