    Jobless rate unchanged at seven per cent in June, says Statistics Canada

    OTTAWA (CP) - The unemployment rate held steady at seven per cent in June as the economy shed a small
    number of jobs, Statistics Canada said Friday.

    The rate hasn't changed in four consecutive months, despite a sluggish economy. About 13,000 jobs were lost
    in June following several months of moderate job creation. Analysts had actually expected a small increase in
    jobs last month and the report of a small loss in employment could shake markets.

    For the first half of this year, employment growth has been around 0.2 per cent, much slower than the
    1.2-per-cent pace reported over the same period last year, StatsCan reported.

    Employment among adult men rose by 19,000 in June but the rate for women over 25 showed little change.

    But jobs for youth, aged 15 to 24, fell by 26,000, mostly in part-time, and that helped lower the overall
    job-creation numbers.

    Despite the loss of jobs in the economy last month, the number of people looking for work also dropped which
    helped hold the jobless rate steady.

    About 1.132 million people sought work last month.

    Work in construction edged up by about 8,000 positions, while jobs were also created in the professional,
    science and technical fields.

    However, the recession in the manufacturing sector continued to cut into employment.

    About 11,000 manufacturing jobs were eliminated last month for a total loss of 53,000 this year - a drop of 2.3
    per cent.

    That almost wipes out the dramatic employment gains of 55,000 in the sector during the last half of 2000.

    Alberta's booming energy sector helped the province add 8,000 new jobs, but its unemployment rate edged up
    to 4.6 per cent as more people looked for work.

    In contrast, British Columbia lost 16,000 part-time jobs while in Ontario employment was little changed and its
    jobless rate edged up to six per cent.

    Quebec saw a jump in part-time work which offset a decline in full-time jobs but a drop in the number of
    job-seekers pushed its unemployment rate down slightly to 8.8 per cent.

      NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The U.S. unemployment rate edged higher in June, the government said Friday, a hint of continuing weakness in the labor market.

      The unemployment rate rose to 4.5 percent from 4.4 percent in May, the Labor Department reported, compared with Wall Street forecasts for a rate of 4.6 percent.




      The economy lost 114,000 jobs last month versus forecasts for a loss of 40,000. The economy created a revised 8,000 jobs in May.

      The report comes nine days after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the sixth time this year in a bid to prevent the United States from slipping into recession.

      Stock futures remained lower after the report, pointing to a weak start for Wall Street. Treasury bond prices sold off after the report but then later regained ground

      OTTAWA (CP) - The demand for workers continued to fall in June, extending a trend which began in November, a Statistics Canada survey indicates.
      The agency's help-wanted index, which measures the number of help-wanted ads in 22 newspapers in 20 major metropolitan areas across the country, fell 1.8 per cent in June after slipping 2.4 per cent in May.

      A rising index suggests employers are seeking workers, a falling index that they need fewer workers.

      How the latest indicator translates into jobs gained or lost will be known Friday when Statistics Canada releases employment-unemployment figures for June. The unemployment rate was 7.0 per cent in May.

      The struggling U.S. economy lost
      another 114,000 jobs in June, the U.S.
      Department of Labor said Friday in a
      report that suggested continued
      weakness south of the border.

      The job-creation figures came well
      below expectations. Economists'
      forecasts had called for job losses for
      the month to come in closer to 44,000.

      According to Friday's report, U.S.
      unemployment inched up to 4.5 per
      cent from 4.4 per cent the month
      before. Economists had predicted the
      rate would rise to 4.6 per cent in June.

      "Manufacturing experienced another
      large job loss and wholesale trade
      employment declined for the third
      consecutive month," the U.S.
      government department said in its
      monthly report.

      "Other major industry groups showed no significant change in employment over the month."

      The report also said average hours worked in June remained steady at 34.3 hours a week.
      Workers' wages grew 0.3 per cent to $14.29 (U.S.) in June, compared with $14.25 the month
      before.

      STOCKHOLM, Sweden (Reuters) - Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson is likely to post a second-quarter loss in line with expectations, but delayed deliveries of third-generation systems may force the firm to cut several hundred more jobs, an Ericsson source said Friday.

      Ericsson (ERICY: down $0.33 to $4.60, Research, Estimates), which lost 4.9 billion kronar ($447 million) in the first quarter due to write downs in its handset business and falling margins, said second-quarter results won't be any better.

      "Second quarter was as expected," the Ericsson source said. The world's biggest producer of mobile networks and fourth-biggest handset supplier, will release its second-quarter results July 20.

      An Ericsson spokesman was not available for comment.




      After British telecom equipment maker Marconi warned Thursday its profit for fiscal 2001 will fall short of estimates and it will cut 4,000 jobs, investors have been concerned more bad news could come from Marconi's (MONI: down $0.28 to $3.07, Research, Estimates) peers such as Ericsson and Nokia (NOK: down $1.28 to $19.07, Research, Estimates), strongly depressing their share price.

      As part of its restructuring plan, Ericsson has launched a tough efficiency program that includes job cuts of up to 22,000 people, or one fifth of the workforce, but has said that unless the market rebounds in the second half, it could end the year in the red.

      "As things stand now, some more job cuts in the systems factories will be necessary, unless we get more delivery orders before the end of the summer, because the company cannot afford to have factories standing idly," the source said.

      "The job cuts are likely to be accompanied by some middle-management shake-up as well."

      "It is part of the company's efforts to focus on returning to positive cash flow -- to move resources to areas that bring in money," the source said. Ericsson had a negative cash flow of 17.7 billion kronar in the first quarter and made a return to positive cash flow one of its top goals this year.

      To end its losses on the mobile phone business, Ericsson outsourced all production to Singapore-based Flextronics (FLEX: down $0.55 to $23.66, Research, Estimates) and formed a mobile phone joint venture with Japanese consumer electronics maker Sony Corp.
