  • 工作学习 / IT杂谈 / what should I stress on computer skill?
I have worked for 10 years.(use VMS,VB,PB, Delphi ).This year I began to learn Java. Now I do a project with 'VisiBroker for java' ,Jsp,Java, Jbulider, iplanet, Html, sun 420.

1>Is "VisiBroker for java" popular in CA?
2>Do you think I can find a job within 6 months?
3>what should I stress on computer skill?

    Thanks!
    • Put more emphasize on your English skills
Your computer skills are good enough. It
really depends on how good your English is .

      Search www.workopolis.com and do some
study on the current IT job market
    • I cannot emphasize too much how important the language skills are
You are really a seasoned programmer. Hope your language skills are good. Only if your (oral) English is good, can you sell yourself to those IT companies. You should be able to express yourself properly and
      understand the managers correctly.

It is not a fictitious story that some true programmers from China cannot get a job because of their poor language abilities.
By the way, don't think your English will
be improved automatically after you arrive in Canada. There are so many Chinese in Canada!
      • Thank both of you!But jabber, why you decide to study c++?
1> Jabber,Is that because basic knowledge of c++ is very useful for hunting job?
2>which should I put more emphisys on ,movies or on news, article, while I improve my listening English?
3>Have you found job,if you donot mind?
4>which city is better for me,Calgary or Toroto?
5> I have two choice, land on Dec or after Spring Festival.Dose it do make a big difference?
The advantage of landing early is:
Too many people come and many turn to study Java.Arriving early maybe is easier to find a job and rent a house. After Spring Festival many many people will arrive.
The advantage of landing late is:
Can aviod cold weather and long christmas holiday. Can improve moer on English and computer.Spending Spring Festival in China.
        So,could you give some advice?
        .
Ask so many questions ,I hope I donot bother you too much!
        • Why do I study C++?
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛1). I have a relatively complete set of Java skills and a clear picture in architecture, so I can find a job even my C++ is awkward. I am learning C++ simply because I am a Java instructor at the same time and I need to know more than Java. On the other hand, not all problems are suitable for Java. C++ and C are very important ... Without C++ background, people can master Java. However, people have to revoke to C++ in some situations.

          2) English is a big problem for new immigrants. I am still in Virginia. My boss
hired a Chinese guy from Shanghai two months ago. My boss has secured about 20 interviews for my colleague but so far he is still at home. My impression is he is a VC++
expert. Actually, his English is not poor. I talked several new immigrants in Toronto and sometimes I felt difficult to understand them because of vocabulary problem. For instance, I know what is a class and what is a virtual class but I cannot understand "Lei" and "Xu Lei". I know what a control panel
is but I don't understand "kong zhi ban".
(Please do not misunderstand me: I have no intention to show off for my likely awkward English.) Many new immigrants stick at using Chinese-version Windows softwares ...
Some new immigrants are still seeking Chinese computer books.

          3) I stayed in Toronto for 4 days. I had the first interview and declined the rest two because I don't want to move to Toronto until
Feb 2000. In my first interview, the manager asked me how about 50 CAD/HR and I kicked the ball to the agent. But I want to tell you the truth: I don't think that first company would like to hire. By intuition, I
know that. After the interview, I told the agent
50CAD/HR is not a good offer so things were over. I know Canada's job market is tough but I am confident in getting a Job. I choose to stay in Virginia for more time because my boss raised my salary by 20K per year. I can
make more money here before I settle down in Canada.
          4) Both Calgary and Toronto are citie full of opportunities. I really don't have any idea
about which one is better for you. :-)
          5) If you are from South China, keep in mind that it is really cold in the winter. If you are from North China, I don't think it is a big problem for you. By the way, it is difficult to get a job in December.
          6) I suggest you visit www.oracle.com,java.sun.com, www.microsoft.com, www.ibm.com frequently. This is a way to learn IT words.
As I tried to get into IT field, I have ever read
some flyers, advertisements from IT companies. Do not think your English will be
improved easily. Toronto is full of Chinese guys. If you like, your Cantonese can be significantly improved. ;-) :-) ;-) 更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
          • just signed in want to talk to you more latter
      • I can understand 85-90% special english,How much gap do you think? How's my chance to find a java job in Voucouver within 4 months?
        • Please do not be over-optimistic about your English. If you wan to have IT jobs, please go to Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary... . Better not Vancouver.
          • I just want to how much percent I should understand at least when I listen to radio"standard english"?Do you think I should get a java certification before lanfing? Thanks for your attention.
            • In my eyes, practising on some tools such as Tomcat, Java Web Server, and Jbuilder, Visual Age for Java is more important than Java certificate.
              • agree,but
I agree with you. I began doing java at the end of 1997 and got the java2 certification on August 5. I don't think it helps much in java or or at least programming skills. what else? oh, mine! it's 11.00 pm, I've to go back home. To be continued tomorrow.
    • Java in Vancouver
As I am working in Vancouver and months ago I was hunting in the job market here, maybe I can tell you something useful.

Java is very hot here now and there are many chances. It's better if you also have database skills. Language is very important and mabye that's what you should really take care of. - Imagine if you can talk with recruiters continuously for 30 minutes with technical questions in english?
      • haha, I mean 30 minutes in telephone
        • FromZtoA, no problem, I can argue away the recruiter on the phone....:-):-):
        • FromZtoA, since so many jobs in your city, should I come down?
          • Oh, welcome! Only companies here cannot afford so much...
            • I don't expect too much, how about 70or 80K?
              • Really? Definitely possible. Last month I contacted a USA company in vancouver and they had contract of USD50-60/hour.
                • In USA, my rate should be $50-75 depending upon projects, positions..
      • FromZtoA,How do you think my job chance in Vancouver compare to Toronto?
I mean, assume if I can get a offer whthin 3months in Toronto, then because there are less chance in
Vancouver, maybe the time is 5 or 6 months.
I just want to know the chance rate(chance/people)
of the two city. I like the weather in Vancouver, but I am afraid it will take me much longer to find a job than in Toronto. So I am happy to see you in Vancouver, please give your advice.
By the way,Do tou mind telling me how long it take you to get a java job? What kind of job is it?
        • Much less jobs here than in Toronto. I think it should be 1/5 - 1/10 rate compared to the number in toronto.
Now I work as database designer, not with java. I got a chance the first week here, anyway I reclined it since i don't like the company. I got the current job the third week.
          • Then what is rate of computer programmer landing in Vancouver compare to toronto? Your English and computer skill must be very good since you find a job in such short time!I will be happy if I can find a job within 3 months.
            • To answer your question...
I would like to have a chance to be in Vancouver International Airport for a whole day to ask new immigrants from China and note down if they are computer programmer and then if they are going to Vancouver, or Toronto. But how about these people landing directly at Toronto? And those guys like Jabber entering Canada directly through the land boundary?

So maybe only CIC can answer your question...
              • Steven, I suggest you don't play by chance
Forgive my frankness. It seems to me that you are not very confident. I can guarantee that there are enough IT jobs in Vancouver for you to hunt.
If you think you are technically very good, and if you are eager to the nicer climat in Vancouver, go ahead. For individuals, chanes do not mean anything. For individuals, there is only one result: success or failure. Toronto is full of job opportunities, but some people cannot find a satisfactory job even they have tried very hard... Time is flying... I hope you spend more time on technologies.
            • Thank both of you! I will put more atttion on english and computer then I make my decision by th end of this year.Hope we can meet next Feb in CA.
