I have tried one, stick shift though. It was a pretty smooth ride, good on gas, but it felt a little bit crowded for a big guy like me. I feel it's even smaller than civic , a lot smaller than corolla.

Although it's a pretty good car(VW is famous for its reliability, I remember a guy called his old beetles "a never-die tough little bastard"), the price is a little bit too steep.

Are you sure? If that's the case, I will definitely go for Golf. European cars usually are considered more decent in North America. In addition, VW usually offer 2 year free service(oil change, maintainence), make sure you get that package.
