  • 工作学习 / IT杂谈 / hi, japper, i need your help!
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Hi, japper it is my pleasure to discuss with you in internet. I should give my thanks to rolia.com, which let me have a better and easier acknowledgement about the reality of Canadian society. I’ve read several messages of yours. It seems to me you are a wonderful friend to all of the new Chinese Canadian immigrants, so thoughtful and sincere. I trust you, and in fact I need your help! Forgive me if it would take your so much treasure time.
At first, I’d like to introduce some basic information of myself: I am 25 years old, single, with 3 years of working experience in a bank. In July, I acquired the LP and planned to land on Canada in March next year.
I’ve already given up my job, and now I am seeking the information about Canada. After several weeks of researching, I am afraid I have to throw away all of my former dreams and accept the fact that it is really very difficult to find a job in Canada. I quite agree with you in the aspect that the most important thing for a new immigrant is to make a living in a new circumstance independently. As Chinese immigrants, we have no much money. So we have no choice but to find a job as early as possible. This is maybe the answer that most of new immigrants choose to study computer. But unluckily, I am major in English. Do I need to change to study IT in Canada? I know if I set a goal, I will achieve it with all my efforts. I don’t scare of the hard work. But i worry about 3 problems the first is whether i can easily find a good job after I graduate from university. You know I am already 25 years old, and 3-4 years is how important to me. I can’t lose another 3-4 years in choosing a wrong major. the second is which road is most suitable for me to enter IT profession. there are 3 ways to enter the IT field. One is though 3-4 years of regular study in university. The Second is with 2 years study in college. The third is one year of short training in a special professional training class. On the one hand, I want to work as early as possible because the IT profession is rapidly developing and it belongs to the young. No one knows what will happen for the IT profession after 4 years. On the other hand, I also want to get a degree and a strong background of IT knowledge. I am now hesitant. last, I wonder if only computer can provide job opportunities? if everyone are engaged in computer, it also will become very competitive. How about other profession? such as trade or finance, which are closer to my major and working experience. now I become a little upset because it is really hard to make a decision.
Sorry, I bring you so much rambling complaint and stupid annoyance. But I am very anxious to hear your advice and suggestion. I believe I will benefit a lot from your advice.
Looking forward to your early reply

    Yours sincerely

    • If you really want to study IT, I suggest you go to university and take a bachelar's degree.
    • Dear Andy, you know a lot of things about the life ...
The only thing I can assure you is that IT won't die in 4 years. 1) Not all the Chinese immigrants are doing IT jobs; 2) Not all Chinese immigrants who want to do IT jobs have succeeded; 3) Not all Chinese IT professionals earn a high salary; 4) Not all Chinese immigrants are interested in IT jobs though the salary is high.....I cannot imagine how you afford severals years to learn IT.
In addition, can you afford the tuition in Canada? I know there are some loans... but but that's not enough.

I cannot help you to choose a road for your life. If I do this, you may blame on me in the future.

      • i am very grateful to your help. actually i know i must make decision by myself. thank you very much, but can you tell me whether i should study for a bachelor degree in a university
        • For IT guys, diploma and/or degrees are not so important. The most important is that you have some true skills. It may take you a few years to get a bachelor degree.. Can you afford?
          • the life is hard, but...
i suppose i could earn the expense of studing and living in a university with my own hands, though it is hard. but do you think it's necessary to study IT form the basic things , spend 3-4 years in going through the course one by one? is it better that one just study java, the most popular and fashionable language in canada presently? thank you
            • You are cornering me...:-) :-):
Usually, I don't want to offer advice for others
if they need to make a decision baout their life. Since you are persistent in asking my opinions, I have to tell you my opinion.

              1) Going through 3-4 year's college training is wasting your time. If I were you, I would not pursue a degree in computer science.

              2) Learning Java is not enough for job hunting. Without guidance, 70% of people cannot succeed in self-teaching Java or other technologies. Attending training center courses does not help you much. If you meet a trainer like me, you may benifit a lot.

              3) In desiging your life, your financial status is extremely important. It is infeasible for you to afford the tuition by doing generic labor in Canada. I sugguest you research the feasibility to become a Java or Oracle programmer in one year.

              4) I hope I am not misleading you.
              • hi jabber, i can't find words to express my thanks to you
hi jabber, i can't find words to express my thanks to you. i quite understant i should be responsible for my desicion. but can you put it in details how become a Java or Oracle programmer in one year. i am now preparing for the damn toefl. maybe i should give up. anyway, i hope i can meet in the future in canada.
                • If I tell people how to become a Java or Oracle programmer within one year here, I will mislead people
I have been exchaning my experiences and lessons with people here. But I cannot tell poeple: do this, do that, you will succeed.
I suggest you talk IT friends around you. They
can speak to you directly. Our communication is constrainted by our communication means---writing. Be sure to seek help from IT friends in your city.
Learning Java is not reading one or two books. You need to communicate with IT friends personally.
                  • I study java only 3 month
The fact you have been very good experience at IT ,programming.
if you very good at C or C++,and worked at programmer for some years, you will find very lanuage all is very easy!
                    • Allen, you may master Java basics within 3 months
However, you need more time to get into j2ee. Some Java basics (at the level of Thinking in Java) are not enough for a Java programmer.
    • hi,buddy. I'm glad to have a non-IT person to post here. I' ve been tracing the forum hosted by jabber since its inception. my remmendation for you: are you fond of gambiling? i mean if you are the sort of person who loves to take risk.

my remmendation for you: are you fond of gambiling? i mean if you are the sort of person who loves to take risk.
if the answer is positive, then forget the IT discipline. You can make big money by first accquiring an mba degree ( best make the use of your english advantage) and then having this degree as your foundation of making big buck. the chance of success depends on your enterprising brain, acumen , and the bless of god.
otherwise just dive into the IT domain -- learn some useful skills like hot java.

Nothing is hard than standing in the crossroad wondering which is the right path!

I'd been a commercial consultant two years before.I took the TOEFL and GMAT with good scores and planed to be an mba prospect at the same time two years ago.Now I have a lovely daughter who is 11 months plus. Within less than two years , I transformed from commercial to IT field. since I don't have that much money to afford the tuition and etc to study in the top 20 US business schools and at the same time to take care of my family in the north america. I hope my dream come true someday .

The old saying: nothing is diffiult if you put your heart into it. From having my first tutor--my wife instruct me on how to use windows explorer two years ago , in less than half a year I got the paper MCSE. by this paper i got a job in one of the largest tele com in china.
those who don't know my history take me as an expert in the field cause I 've been in charge of establishing an intranet ,isp, voip project and peronally do some programing with asp,vb and sql.

by the way ,just like you i got lp in july and plan to land in next march.

good luch with your choice!更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
      • I appreciate your example. To migrate to IT fields, however, one needs a period of time and persistent efforts.
If your exeriences, your wife played a role of mentor. This helped you a lot. I still can remember the difficulties I have experienced...
I messed up VB tool bar, I asked help from others but they either di't know how to solve the problem or had no patience in helping me. For a beginner, there are a lot of difficulties and frustrations....If anybody wants to join IT gambling, he/she must allow some time. In addition, most people need some guidance at the very beginning.
        • thank you, tang, thank jabber, ........
thank you, tang, thank jabber, thank all of you. tang, you gave me a good example of a non-IT person changing into IT profession.
to be frank, i personally understand myself. i am the sort of persons that don't like take risks and gambling. besides, i prefer to live in a comfortalbe and simple ways. making lots of money is not essencial for me
in my point of view, making a living is more important than seeking the fortune in canada for the new immigrants. do you agree with me? i become more confident after reading you advice. by the way, i wish we could go to canada together since we got the same
situation now. i am in foshan, guangdongprovince. where are you? hope to keep in touch with you?
          good luck, my friend
