        • Can you image once you lost this job, you must find another one within two weeks. Otherwise, you have to leave. If you apply green card, all will stop. You lost everything.
      • i wouldn't suggest him do that. once u r there, u will be very painful waiting for your US green card. u won't understand the feeling unless u have been there.
          • So easy question. U do not need to bother Speed. Let me try. H1 is something like working permit in Canada, and Green Card in the states is something like your Landed Paper in Canada.
              • H1 is just a working visa. It is the same as B1 visitor's visa and F1 student visa except you can work, not prove of your residence. It will expire but residence wouldn't.
                  • With H1, as soon as you lose your job and cannot find a new one in a certain period, you have to leave the country. And every time you change a job, you have to re-apply H1.
                  • If you lost your job, your stay in that country will be illegal unless you can secure yourself another visa, not to mention your house in that country. Besides that, Nothing would be different.
If you change your job. your H1 has to be renew.

You can apply for US green card based on your H1 visa but you have to stay in that particular company long enough and that company is willing to sponsor you.

So can you guarantee nothing will happen within the next 5 years?

        • economy is slow, i got laidoff, since i am canadian citizen, so i dont worry like a h1 holder, in fact i am considering moving back to canada shortly,
    • up
    • If I were you, I will stay until the citienship. I landed 3 years ago because I could not secure a H1 in US. After 3 years, some of my classmates who are still on H1in US start to regret...
    • PS: You will lose your LP.
        • No return PR unless U work for a Canada company in oversea.
          • Bingle
            • U R welcome!
    • Nobody has a clear clue. Who knows about the future? Many landed immigrants have gone to US, many people who had worked in US have to come to Canada.
        • don't forget Nortel, JDS,RIM,CAE,Bombardier, ATI in Canada.
    • If you are older than 30, and have kids, wirking in software field, here is better.
    • go US, and leave your position to ME.
    • I think it depends on what you are looking for. What are you looking for short term (1-3 years) and long term (over 6 years).
Do you have a family? kids? how many? how old are they?

Okay, assuming you're single, one way or another ;). Then ask a question: What can you do, or gain, or make there south of the border, that you can't here in Canada. If you don't know or know nothing that you can't, then stay. You can find a 6 figure full-time here too, ask the hosts. ;)

If there's any that you know, then make a risk evaluation and judgement call. Especially if you're only 20-ish, why not. There're much better places in the US. All depends on your view of the trade offs.

If you don't mind, tell me the city you're heading, I might tell if it's better than toronto or not for living... ;)
        • The valley! Nice place. The ups and downs that I know, keep reading
          本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Downs:

          - High real estate price, rental price.
Can be offset if you'll get a 6 month relocation package
or if you'll travel a lot as a single.

          - Worse chinese food.
Still much better than many other places. The good ones I
know are in Mt. View and the city where Apple's headquarter
          is, forgot the spelling... :(

          - Higher Competition, many worse than Nortel
Many high tech companies to choose once bounce back

          Ups:

          - Nice weather, gives you higher energy, good mood.
          - Close to San Fran, one of the best cities in US, in many's opinion.
          - Great state to be in.
          - Less good quality of kid's education that I heard.
          - More career opportunities.

          Bottom-line:

          - I'll go if I'm single if they you'll make at least 70% percent higher income in numbers (not dollars). Or if it's a career opptunity, like moving for a higher position, or well-known corp like Sun Micro. ;)

Why US is such a big deal for you? I'm not questioning your conclustion, everyone has his own reasons, what's yours? Just curious.
          Here are a few points:

          1. You need to believe whereever you choose to live is the best place for you. If you don't think so, leave that place.

          2. Always go to the place you think is the best. If you really think US is the best for you, go for it. 7 years ago I thought US was best for me, so I went to US. You will have better judgement of living place when you have comparasion.

          3. Don't listen to other people's arguing. Although they are telling their true feeling, they are not you. You are the only person can make decision for you.

          4. Since you are going to San Jose, the case is a little easier. Since you don't care 美国身份, the best case for you is your employer will do H1B for you so you can work in US up to 6 years, at the same time you hire a lawyer to do GC. The second best case is that you will be laid off within 6 months (very possible in San Jose) so you can be back to Canada safely. Anything else will put you in big trouble. Evaluate yourself to see whether worth the risk.
