  • 枫下家园 / 生活杂事 / How to change to English name?
As most Chinese, the name on my passport is the "pin yin" of my Chinese Name. But I felt it's very unconvinient for Americans to read my chinese name. I do have an English name and after i came to U.S i use it in all the informal situation. People here know me as my English name but on all the formal documents(transcript, bills, creditcard..), i have to use my orginal name on the passport and sometimes it confused some of my friends and professors here. I think a typical English name is neccessary for us since we are going to live here permanentely. I'm waiting for my landing paper and i'm sure the name on the LP will be the Chinese name again. What can i do for this situation..?
    • If you live in Ontario...
and have been here for 12+ months, you can go to the provincal government, apply for changing your name.

Western people have got used to name changing, because women change the name after marriage. You'll see there's a dedicated section in the government handling name changing affairs.

In the office people call me by my English name, and my real name only appears on the payment stub.
      • Thanks!
      • You mean you actually didn't change your name officially, but you have an english name by which people usually call you? I just want to know if this is ok? If that's fine, I don't need to change my name in documents. right?
        • Of course you don't NEED to change the name, but you will find it's not convinient for u in some cases.
