  • 工作学习 / 事业与工作 / How I found 2 contract jobs recently...( To IT guy only )
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I have to admit I've been having some hard time finding an IT job recently. I've never experienced my phone so quiet before. After I sent out my resumes, it has been VERY VERY quiet. For the last 3 months, I've only received 6 phone calls. 3 of those actually gave me interviews. Got 2 offers this week. But they are all short term contract. One is in Ottawa for a government subsidiary for 2 months. One is in Toronto for GE for 3 months. Since I've taken the one in Ottawa last Friday, I rejected the offer from GE yesterday cause it came late.

I've tried workpolis.com and monster.ca. It doesn't help at all. I think these web sites are too popular. One position posted there can attract hundreds maybe thousands of resumes. The 6 phone calls I've got were actually from newsgroup. Most of the opportunities posted in the newsgroup are from small agents. I've found those small agents are effective some time. Usually they don't have a lot clients but they do have very good personal relationship with a few companies. So their recommendation really works in most of the case. Unlike some of the big agents, if the small agent can post out a position, that means they do have the opportunity in hand. Sent out your resume and a follow-up call right after, you will get person-to-person service most of the time.

Don't ask me how to use the newsgroup. The newsgroups I was using were ont.jobs, tor.jobs and ott.jobs.

During the interview, the can-do attitude is very important. Don't brag yourself too much. Try to present yourself as much as possible, let them know you as a person, where did you work before, what kind of work have you done and what was your responsibility, listen to their requirement and then show them what you are capable of doing. Don't just sit there waiting for the questions from the interviewers. You don't need to know everything but you do need to know how to get around the questions you don't know. I remember I was stuck with one XSLT question. I just told them I don't have the answer on top of my head and also I told them where I could find the answer.

The IT job market is really slow recently but we can't give up trying. Good luck to those people who have not given up yet.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
