      1. one PC which is connected to Cable modem, say the mater host, would have to install another NIC to communicate with those hosts in your local network, which the IP Address assignment is on you demand.

      2. the master host would be a Proxy server, that is, it provide internet access request proxy function to those hosts that are locating in your local network, which are using invalid IP Address. Basically the master host, which is Internet Proxy server, would provide internet proxy function, that is, TCP Port 8080. in addition, it would also "proxy" another type of services, like SMTP, DNS, etc.

        In the proxy case, other hosts in my local network have to depend on the master host ( proxy server). Is it possible that 2 hosts work independently? Thanks!

        • but what you want is the two hosts would like to connect Internet simultaneously. so that server ust provides some extra functions, like Proxy, DNS, NATT, etc to another hosts in your local Lan. -songl(风); 2001-9-7 {461} (#193073@0)
          in this scenario, you have to let the server power on so it could provide such services. do you have any concern on this? Or, when the server is power down, you could change your local Lan host's hostname to the server's in order to pass the Roger's DHCP authentication, and change to DHCP as well, then you could get the valid IP, DNS, etc from Rogers, and they will access the Internet and you probably feel comfortable about the security of your server.
