这位加拿大朋友不是老师,参加过TESL(Teaching English as Second Language)的培训,但没有实际的经验.
Don't! She will waste your time if she doesn't have necessary expertise. Her 15 dollars an hour is more expensive than 75 dollars an hour from a linguistic expert.

Because she doesn't have a clue of how to handle your problem. She just couldn't fully utilize your time.
Sorry just saw your question.

The most important reason that they hired me was for my technical background. Another thing, as for interview, since it was a telephone interview, which could make me much easier to listen to them, I could get pass it quite eaiser than face to face.
Personally, I don't think it's necessary.

Now you are in Canada, there are tons of opportunities to pritice your oral English. In order to improve your writing skill, you can take some short term courses in Toronto University. Maybe it's more effective. (Only based on my own experience).
I have the same problem. But I think TV and cassettes should be enough for listening. For speaking, I try to repeat what I heard.

1. Watching TV to improve your listening.
2. Buy a small recorder and practice your oral English.
3. Hiring such English teacher only to correct your pronunciation.
