u do need. it's in the land of USA, and in US, u actually can go anywhere from airport 'cuz nobody can prevent you from doing that. oh, but destination of ur luggage is Canada and you don't have to take it out in Detroit, hehe.

i dont think u need a transit visa. i went to brazil via san francisco by United Airline. there is a special lounge for transit travelers at the airport. if you intend to go outside of it, some guy will stop you.

no, u definitely need transit visa, even Chinese custom will check it for you(sounds funny 'cuz it's nothing of their business). INS people at Detroit airport are tough if you have problem with your spoken English.
