本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I am over 36 years old ,more than 10 years' software programming experience and now work as IT programmer at a provincial branch bank of a state commercial bank in China. Recently my bank gives me a house about 120 square meter size at the cost about 100000 yuan if I promise to continue to work for the bank for 15 years.

I began my immigration application three years ago and pass the interview in HK at the end of 1998. Unfortunately I met with the background check as I was a PLA man. After more than 2 years background check, the immigration section will give me and my wife and son the landing paper soon. When I tell some friends who have come to Canada one or two years before, they tell me I'd better not go there, because there are no hopes and no future in Canada and finding good job only by fortune not by your level, they feel very lonely there. Canada is not their land. It is very hard for them to get along with the Canadian society. No recreation , no time and no heart to enjoy Canadian beautiful scenery. They all seem heavy-hearted . When I asked them how about their tomorrow in Canada, their answers are "I do not know!" . Some of them are going to go back China.

Is it true? Is it so terrible to live and in Canada ? Is it really not hope and no better future in Canada for new immigrants. Whether are most of new immigrants regret of going to Canada?

I will appreciate if some friends who have come to Canada tell me the true, and give me some advices and tell me it is right or wrong if I give up my current job and give up my somewhat better life in China and go to Canada to carve out my new way from vrey beginning .

Merry Christmas and Happy new year and Good luck to everyone.
    • Canada is not good for every body
    • It depends on your situation
I can't agree with what your friends said. Whether you can get a job depends on your working experience and communication skills, not the fate. So think about your situation. Is your English good enough? Do you master the hot and up-to-date technical skills? Can your spouse find a good job? Life is not easy if you can not find a job quickly. Even if one of you can find a job of 50 or 60K, when you have to pay for the house mortgage and car loan, so many insurance, RESP, RRSP, you still find you're in tight budget.
      • maybe you misunderstand my meaning. I mean I only pay 100,000 yuan to buy a new house aboue 120 suqare meters.
        • I think you should not hesitate to go.
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛After I graduated with a MS in CS,I worked
for a Bank, the pay was very good.I resigned to go to work in Singapore.Singapore is
easy to find a job.Objectively say the
place is good if you want to make money
there. The tax is very low in Singapore.

I was very missing China while working in Singapore. So I back to China. Working for several Hi Tech companies, the pay is also good compare to people in China. But
gradually I found that it is become hard
to find a job for me in China because my
age has over 35.Most recuritment ads on
news paper require below 35 years old even
below 27/28/30. I know many people are required to retire at the age of 50 no matter how excellent are they.
I just received a offer with monthly pay RMB10000 and share option after long
time job search in China. After consideration,
I declined the offer and decide to landing Canada.
Because, today you have a high pay job in China, tomorrow you may XiaGang.Nobody can guarantee your future. In China, you youth
          is very short.

I think, because Canadian PR now become
relatively easy to get,so people forget to
          cherish it.Back to 15 years ago,my classmate
went to Canada and got PR after 8 years
          struggle.
We are luck now, I think.
Think about,if Canadian gov delcares to close the immigration door from now on,how will you make your decision? and your friends who advise you don't come will back to China?
Of course, someone choose abandon Canada and back to China permanently.
But we just can say they are seldom. Many my
friends in Singapore went to USA or
Canada, but back to China, like me,I am seldom.

        • Anyhow, thnak rabbit very much for giving me some advices and encouragement
        • let me put this way
here when people buy HOUSE, not apartment, they rarely consider its lot size. it is very common to own a house larger than 2200 sq feet. area is not a key factor at all.

fireplace, 4+ bedromms, 2 garages, large backyard, nice lawn...

provided that u find a decent job, all these come true right away.
    • In my opinion you go there is a smart choice!~
You should go to there! Maybe not for you and your wife but for your son! You can get a good job in Canada by your knowledge! Maybe it will be very hard for you at the begaining but you will love that place when you live there for a long time!! In my opinion go there is a smart choice!~
    • i might be choosed for the background check, would you be so kind to tell me some detailed information about the background check? Can you give me your e-mail address and I can contact with you?
i might be choosed for the background check, would you be so kind to tell me some detailed information about the background check? Can you give me your e-mail address and I can contact with you?
      • about background check
if you was army man or your work had some relation with security or secrecy, maybe you would have some trouble. the Immigration officials will send a request to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service(CSIS) and ask CISIS to make an investation about your background. If that, just like me ,it is very unfortunate. the background will cost half a year or one year untill two year because there are too many persons will be checked and hard to make this investation. So , When you fill in the application table, be careful ,DO not say you and your spouse worked in the army etc.
        good luck to everyone.
        • How about CCP members? Is there any trouble for them?
          • Do not tell them you are a CCP member! Generally they will not ask you this question.
      • Background Check
    • China is not so Bad compare to Canada. and Canada is not so good compare to China. The most important thing is to enjoy your life whenever in China or in Canada.

It was so kind of you to reply me. I had the working experience in a faoreign consulate in Shanghai for 1.5 years as the commercial assistant of Consul General. I started the immigration application from two years ago by myself when I didn't know anything about the background check, so I filled application form with all the real information. I got IELTS score 7 in Sep.1999, and passed the interview and ME in Hong Kong in June 2000. I'm now still waiting for the visa or LP.

During the waiting period, I asked the Canadian Consulate in Hong Kong re.my case through e-mail. They answered me with only one sentence "the background check takes at least two months". Does it mean I was chosen for the check? At this time, I understood there is the background check for some people who has the special experience such as army or diplomatic.

I have no friend who has this experience to be checked, so I would like to ask some help from you. Would you tell me some more information about the background check? How can I know I was chosen to be checked? How do they check me? Shall I get any notice for that? Before the ME valid date, will the Canadian Consulate inform me to have a new ME? I don't mind to wait, but I hope to know the situation. I have to arrange my life accordingly. What can I do now?

My e-mail address is : liur@stn.sh.cn, can I contact with you directly?

Thank you again and best regards,

      • I try to email you,but failed . if possible, please tell me your phone directly.
        • Thanks , pine
Thanks , pine, my phone no. is 021-56908573, Ms.Liu
        • Thousands thanks for your phone call. I'll keep you informed about my case. Here I found the website of SCIS and the some more information about BC.
CSIS has the web-site: csis-scrs.gc.ca . It's said: In 1997/98, the Service processed 53,029 requests from CIC under the Immigration Screening program. The average processing time was 24 days and approximately 51 percent of all cases were completed within this time-frame. The remaining 49 percent averaged 73 days to complete. Less than one percent of all cases took longer than 12 months to process.

So as you said, the BC will take normally less than one year.

You said you checked CSIS for your case, did you(or your rep.) use phone call, e-mail or fax?

          Thanks again.
          • my rep. sent a letter to CSIS and they replied by letter. you can try a letter or fax.

      • you are so kind,替他谢谢你!
      • thank you very much for giving me advices. you are right, if I get the LP and give up, I will be regret all my life. Maybe I should bet.
      • Right!
    • It is all depend on yourself
      本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Hi, Friend

I am a new immigrant,a project engineer in oil industry, and now is living in Calgary,AB. I have met a lot of other new immigrants from all around the world. I realized that to find a job is only for luck.

You have to have a Canadian working experience before you get a job(Canadian experience)!

No matter what have you done in Your backhome, You can only do beginer's job.

It is a big change, both in living and working. I am a young man, younger than most of the immigrants in Canada. I think I will go to the U.S. later. Canada is not my end. One reason, even Beiging is Better than any city in Canada.

I think why you are coming to Canada is most importment. I have a friend, both the husbend and wife are project manager in China, they bring some ten thound US$s to Canada. They came just for their san. They are so happy to find a drafting job now.

To live in Canada is easy, but it is hard to live a good life as you see from the American film. The most improtment thing I think is how you can treat the change.

To most our immigrant the hardest is English. You have to join the Canadians and have small tolk with them, in order to make friend with them. Most jobs comes through that. The language learning will never end.

All of the above is just what i think with my own experience, I do not think any advice can work for others to decide his own plan. Everybody should account on himself.

      Yours,

      • It is very kind of you to tell me more. thnak you and good luck to you and all immigratants from China.
        • hope it is of help
          i think you should come.

given your professional qualifications, you ought to find a relavant job comparatively easily.

brush up your english/investigate canada's job market/tailor your resume/show yourself when required...

          good luck.
          • It is very kind of you. Thank you!
            • welcome
      • english etc.
to be 100% honest, i disagree to your comment that finding a job is based on pure luck. i have a lot of counter-examples to prove you are wrong.:)

your english needs improvement indeed. frankly again, I do not think your future will end up with a rosy american dream.

btw, how many canadian and american cities have you been?

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛It totally depending on if your skill is enough solid, your interpersonal skill and your characteristic can fit for challenge. actually, some of new immigrants got back after few months or few years hard working here. But, there are still have some settled finally. why they are totally different. My point of view, first of all ask for your experience in IT is solid or not, secondly, ask your interpersonal skill is enough open, and can facing difference environment different challenge. If all you said yes, one thing remain. Ask God if bless you. I dont think Canada do not a place fit for chinese people. Canada is the best living place in the world, people saying that I think it should have some reason. Why you didn't trust them. If you are a success one in Canada instead of China. I bet, the life here should be better than you stay in China. even your kids and spousal will enjoy with that stay. think about it, and have a good prepration, gonna be the best of your choice. English is most important for your life if you decided to go instead of stay. and High-tech knowledges are the same.
你怎么知道你就会拿到landing paper? yuann@yeah.net, can u connect me?

          Thanks.
    • Pay a visit to Canada before making your final decision, if it's possible.
Think about it, when you shop for a cloth, you may visit stores many times and try the different ones, and immigration is a life time decision and why are so many people doing it so blindly?

I think most people now can afford the trip and can find some way to visit Canada. If can't, then treat your first landing trip as a short visit rather than cutting off the road of returning.

In a word, don't push yourself into the corner. Immigration is a risk thing to do, don't fall in love with it just because you invest so much time and money on it.
      • but you are always on the side of the city, of the community. Can you tell anybody you are canadian? NO, you are always Chinese.
    • don't come here
