Is there anybody who can explain why so many Chinese choose computer and accounting. Is there other alternatives for Chinese new immigrants? What about nursing, it is also hot. Can somebody give me an idea?
    • Hi, my friend is now studying nursing course. As I know, it is a hot job and very stable. You can even go to U.S, because it is also very hot in U.S.
    • My opinion

      • English major, good English command. No problem in finding a job, however, what I need is more than a job, is a career.
        • A career has to be something that you like, you have the ability to perform, and something that can bring you an adequate income.
        • You may try clerical jobs if you like, 90% of them are female. Otherwise, pick up accounting. Other options are: legal assistant, medical assistant, teaching, nursing, tourism.
          • However, I don't like clerical work. I was working as an administrative assistant to a senior manager after my arrival in Toronto.
      • If your English is poor, don't try to become a nurse. Those textbooks are not easy to handle.
      • who knows more about paralegal? Please help!
        Hi, patpat
I read your message posted on Rolia. I am interested in Paralegal, but do not know very much about this field. You said in your message that you had a friend who had studied Paralegal, could you give me more information about it? Like: which program should I choose to study? what is the background requirement for people who want to study it?

    • some thoughts on this. any career has jobs somewhere, otherwise that career would have vanished. however, having said that,
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛we want a job somewhere. Most of new immigrants eye on computer or accounting due to two reasons, 1. more job opportunities, 2. less language requirements. Anyone with limited savings arriving in a new place with high expenses, he is scared, no wonder. He has no preference on his career any more, just pick a job, any job. Plus, with the new economy, the demand mainly focuses on the IT jobs, and most people project IT as computers. With no doubt, most new comers dive into computer training right away to get a quick landing on a programmer job. As long as the businesses are going, the demand for accounting remains. So, wait a second, the businesses do not only require accounting skills, the only barrier prevents pepole to think of other business related jobs is the language. In fact, in many companies, the people with the best sales often turn to be Chinese! So, as long as your English is not so bad, as long as you feel you are brave enough to speak to others, don't give up your marketing talent. As long as you have good pepole skills, don't give up your management skills. When you go into an MBA program, please don't just think about financial analysis. If you intentionally use your talents, you will keep it and you will benefit from it. Don't just label Chinese as techos, don't label yourself as merely a techie. If you like computers, fine, welcome to the party. If you don't like computers, think carefully your career 10 years from now on before you get on board. Same to accounting if you enjoy the numbers. There are many other related careers as well. For example, if you like art, there is graphic design. However, if you like touring around, why not get a truck license and be a truck driver? If you like to deal with warehouse or system control, why not take a logistics major? If you like guns, exersice the shooting in your basement or backyard and represent Canada in Olympics someday. As said, all the roads to Rome. Okay, take a piece of paper now, do a brainstorming on what you'd like to do, and go from there. Good luck, friends! Where there is a will, there is a way.

I guess the answers are all obvious. We have no other choice.
    • It is important to sense what WILL be hot, not what IS hot.
Unless you can finish the training in less than 6 months. Besides, you need to consider your strengths and weeknesses and the market needs. Career assessment offered by many HRDC programs and a look at jobfuture.ca will give you above info.
