  • 枫下家园 / 住房话题 / Hi, friends at Vancouver, please give me some advice on North Surrey. I am interested in an apt there. Low rent and near King Georgy Skystrain Station. But i hear North Surrey is not safe.
Does anyone have any idea how unsafte North Surrey is? If there anyone forcing you to buy drug with a gun? Or just many working class? Any information is welcome.
    • up. any information is welcome.
      • i live there for 4 mons, it's very safe, not bad. but it's far away from superstore.
        • Thank you for the information. Are there many Chinese people there? And would you please to confirm you live in north Surrey or south Surrey?
    • "anyone forcing you to buy drug with a gun" -- I don't think that ever happened in Vancouver.
      • Our Toronto friends on this forum discussed this phenomenon near downtown Toronto several months ago. And Toronto is said to be safer than Van. As I will come back home late in the evening, I have to be cautious.
        • That's Toronto, not Vancouver. You see, here in Van, we don't have problems associated with black people - in fact, most black people I see on the streets are pretty decent people.
And who told you Toronto is safer than Van?
          • Thank you. I am really glad to hear this. As for city safety, Van has the second highest criminal rate in Canada (next to Victoria), while Toronto has the 10th. But overall Canada is a very saft country.
            • Hmm... Victoria, you mean our provincial capital? has the highest crime rate in Canada? That looks very odd to me. Care to share the info source?
People used to tell me that there was a plan to build a bridge to Vancouver Island but people there opposed the plan saying that it would bring crime over there ...

Anyway, in Vancouver, we see cars got broken into, we see homes got broken into, but we seldom see robbery ...
              • Yes. I got this from many resources. But I cannot name one currently. I will post it after I find. One reason of the relative high criminal rate is our warm winter, which is more attractive to homeless people.
              • Please see this article about crime rates in Canada. http://canadaonline.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.statcan.ca/Daily/English/000718/d000718a.htm

                • Regina is the highest, right? Although Victoria and Vancouver are in the 2nd and 4th place, respectively, in the total crime category, but
for violent crime, Victoria and Vancouver are in the 4th and 6th place; for property crime, they are in the 3rd and 2nd place.

In other words, there are more break-ins than robbery here in BC.
            • Seeing is believing. Why not stay in Van for a while before drawing your conclusion
              • I will. But I cannot help searching for a better home: cheap, safe and comfortable (am I expecting too much?).
                • Oh yes you are :-) I'd say cheap, safe and comfortable don't usually go together ...
                • It has never been easy. Good luck!
                • thank you.
    • South Surrey is better, I am not sure whether skytrain can reach there
      • King George is the terminal of skytrain. So South Surrey is out of the question for me.
        • How about foods ? maybe chinese foods are limited there.
          • I am used to buying everything including tofu and soy source from ordinary supermarket. But it is not a good idea to live in a place where there is no Chinese.
Surrey has some Chinese population in my impression. I'll have to confirm that before signing a lease. Thank you.
            • Surrey is a town crowded of Indian people.
    • Last year, a 9-year-old girl was abducted, her body was found one week later at Golden Ear Park. That happened in Surry. //grin...
But, I'd say it is a safe place to live.
