Our society is based on a very superficial culture, a well dressed, stylish man portraits an image of success and believe or not, trustworthiness and reliability, how can I trust you to handle a client properly if you can't even manage your own day to day appearance and, to the extreme, which is rather common amongst new immigrants, personal hygenie is often compromised...

the dotcom era brough in the "wear your underwear to work is cool" notion, that's a twist on the tradition, it is by no means the main stream or what people perceived success is.

看到“从初中起就买ELLE”，我就断定tropicalfish有个富爸爸或富妈妈的留学生，因为我读大学时，穿ELLE、ESPRIT这些牌子都是这样，这种消费不是我们每个月拿几百块钱生活费的学生所能负担的。
可我看了前面的旧贴，特别是6月份的贴子，发现tropicalfish自称mature woman，也是普通的poor student.
我有点搞不清楚了。

In later 80's, Shanghai Translation Publlishing House published its first Chinese version ELLE, Which was basicly copied from its parent French publish house. In middle 90's, ELLE began to use local chinese model who belongs to shanghi style(shanghi fushi), a local magazine. ELLE is the very fisrst fashion magazine in China.

In Canada, ELLE only have its Quebec French version. The Canadian fashion magazine is flare and fashion.
