  • 枫下家园 / 生活杂事 / Today I bought a money order in CAD from a bank, for my wife's application fee. The rate is 1.52978 and the comminssion fee is 20USD. So 60 CAD cost me 59.22USD. Almost 1:1.
    • in american bank? why not simply withdraw money from TELLER, and tell her/him u need cdn$, i think the service is free, then u use THAT money to buy money order, btw, why not use credit card? just wonder
      • No such service. I cannot find a bank to get CAD in cash in my town. Can I use my credit card in Canada?
      • Today, I went to the bank and returned the money order, got my whole money back. --Indeed I can pay the application by credit card. Thank you for reminding.
    • I have the impression that both Buffalo and Beijing accept US dollars. Anyway, banks are crazy, canadian banks are worse than US banks.
      • why?
        • eg. Canadian banks charge $5 for a money order. US banks usually sell cashier's check for $0-0.5. US post office sell money order for $0.8.
          • lets talk--my usa bank charges a fee when u withdraw from ATM, while
canadians not; certified check is even more expensive; in ur checking account ur minimum balance is required quite high in usa banks, the dishonored cheque is a even higher price;...
            • The price is 2001, with Bank of America and US Post Services.
          • I've been with Bank of America for several years and never paid a cent for ATM transfer (within US) and checks (requiring a minimum $1000). Cashier's check is free, too, 3/mo. I also had experience with another
smaller bank, which waiver my bank fee for one year. CIBC, on the contrary, requires a minimum of $1000 for free banking of a limited amount, but there are some service charges almost every month. Royal bank charges a flat fee for limited services.
            • Bank One, ok? even on-site ATM, i will be charged 0.50 a time for withdraw,or u may stand in line, wait and act exactly like
visiting a jailed person---camera probe is hidden there and faced to you, u know it; window never opens; u communicate using a phone and a canister (know this?) as your "transportation", only when u r done, u see a quick face voicing "all set sir"
              • Why not try another bank? (Maybe smaller banks have higher interest.) Bank of America has ATM in every Abertson, Kmart stores. I used a smaller bank because it had more ATM in the city I lived.
                • i do have 2acnts, just show you how tough 1 of them is. :-)
              • It is Bank One I bought the money order. First, $20 fee. Secondly, I need the second Photo ID beside DL even though I paid USD in cash.
                • which state? looks like the rules and practices differ from office to office
        • My bank does not have the foreign currency exchange service. So I found the biggest bank in town. $20 for non-member.
I knew that because I bought the money order for the landing fee. $20 meant little for $3000 CAD landing fee and application fee. But for $60CAD, it is really expensive.
          • I think when you landing, you can carry some cash in US dollars . After you open a canadian account, you can wire money from US in case of emergency. BTW Buffalo accepts cashier's check in US dollars.
Depends on the bank and province, it takes 15-30 days to cash a US cashier's check and 15-40 days to cash a US personal check. But it's free.
            • Which credit card (applied in the US) can still be used in Canada? Visa, MC, Discover, American Express, Sears?
I am trying to buy airtickets from Toronto to Shenyang. The traveling agency did not accept US credit card. She wanted me to send Money Order in CAD to her.
              • you can use any type of credit card ( you applied in US) in Canada if the store accepts this type of the credit card. keep in mind, do not terminate your US credit card after you come to Canada.
you still need some time to get your new Canadian credit card.
