      • Hi! Good to know that someone is thinking of the same thing as I do. I‘m sure that an experienced AS/400 programmer will find a job in Canada, sooner or later. But I worry about the future of such a career. By the way, have you received your LP?
        • I got the lp. It is good to begin new technology
Java is still a good chice
          • Congratulations! Good luck!
    • You may count the AS/390 and AS/Box in Canada.
That there are opportunities does not mean you can get a job. That your friend got an As/400 job does not mean you will get a job.

On the other hand, if you transit to other fields such as Java, but with a strong background of AS boxes, you will have more opportunites. IT professionals should always be ready to learn new technologies until they quit.

Indeed, Java was overheated last year. In any case, Java has a very strong industry momentum and it can offer people more opportunites.
      • Thank you, Jabber. Could you tell me what AS/Box is? I'm embarassed that although I've been working with IBM technologies for years, I've never heard of that box before.
        • Sorry for my typos...
In the English communities, people usually talk abou the computers
using the following words: computer, machine, box..... For instance,
people may say " We have two AIX boxes". In my above posting, I made some typos. What I really meant is AS/390 and AS/400 boxes.

Indeed, AS/390 and AS/400 are still being used. But they are not in the mainstream. If you stick to AS/390 and AS/400, your road will be very narrow.

Sorry again for my misleading typos.
          • Thank you for your patience. No sorry please.
      • And how about DB2 and SQL? I'm rather farmiliar with them. Are they useful in the Java world? Thanks a lot.
        • DB2 is an IBM main product so it is popular.
But you should not stick to a specific platform, in particular, to Windows. I guess you meant MS SQL server by SQL here. Of course, MS SQL server has some shares in the market.
          • I use the AS/400 version of DB2. We use SQL statements when writing server side programs, like stored procedures and triggers. We call it embeded SQL. I think it is just like using SQL in Java.
            • If you were given an opportunity, you can undertake a lot of tasks. I don't doubt it.
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛However, it is difficult for you to convince those employers that you are the right person. They hire you not because you have 10 years of experiences in the field they are not interested in. If you try to explain that "embedded SQL" is like using SQL in Java( not truee exact exactly),
they would not like to listen to you. Just like men's hunting for a girl friend: The man just want to have a beautiful one even those he himself is ugly-looking. If you are not beautiful and you try to convince the man that you will be very caring after the marriage, they generally do not trust you. Of course, most of the men in this world have to marry not-so-beautiful wives.

AS/400 is no longer mainstream, though it will exist for a while. But you
have a long way to go. As an IT professional, you have to embrace new technologies constantly. I have ever taught a Java student with AS/400 background. I found she seemed to come from another world. Her sight is narrowed to that AS/400 box. She was at her 40's. She just knew AS/400 stuff. She came to learn Java because their company has decided to throw away AS/400 boxes. Unfortunately, she was not successful in learning Java.

I'm not encouraging you to hug Java. But I do hope you learn something new. IT does not hurt you.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
              • It's very kind of you, Jabber.
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Well, fortunately, I think I'm not that stuborn about as/400. In the first couple of years following my graduation, I did many interesting things: writing games for palm top Gameboy, tracing down encrypted software, write stock market software using C++... Then I entered a bank and focus on AS/400. And then came the promotions.

But now, I have to go back to the starting point and start all over again. I think it is kind of hard for me to take it, not because I don't want to learn. Actually, I do like studying new things. It is because you have to go back to the same starting point as those new graduates, and those who have newly transferred to the IT field.

I think I may haven't been reasonable here. Maybe that's the cost of going to a place where there is no one who'd give a shit to your past. Any way, I think I can over come it.

May I ask you a question, Jabber? Have you thought about starting your own business? I mean IT firm, not grocery, of cause. : ) I think you've shown at least some of the qualities of doing this. Is it a very difficult thing for us Chinese in Canada?更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
      • Jabber, would you mind give me some tips on AS/390?
I am an IBM fan. I know some IBM products: OS/390 MVS/ESA VSE/ESA DOS/VS OS/360 VM (ON S/390 ES/9000 3090 4381 S/360 etc.) AIX (ON RS/6000) OS/400 (ON AS/400) OS/2 and PC-DOC( ON PC) but never heard of AS/390. Jabber, would you mind give me some tips on it?
        • Should be OS/390. You are an expert. Don't tease me, please.
There are a lot of mistakes in my postings. Thank you for pciking up the bugs. Sometimes, a simple typo can lead to a very absurd mistake.

          Thank you again.
        • By the way, this reminds me of a mistake I often committed two years ago: I used to type "she" as "he"!
    • AS/400 Era at its end!! u r right, pick up smth new, leading edge. AS/Box is kind of nickname for IBM midrange.
      • Nick name! Was I kind of foolish? hehe!
    • 我也是做AS/400的,本不想做了,想转向RS/6000,可现在公司又有了个AS/400的项目,还得接着做。不知各位对Business Intelligence 的前景有何高见? 洗耳恭听。
