1, SZ is not better than BJ; 2, even if SZ better than BJ, "hu kou" is a fatal factor.
      • 唉,偶在这儿苦口婆心,你上来就打岔!!;)
    • Is it same reason that many Chinese immigrates come to toronto?? But Toronto is more expensive that other smaller cities in Ontario, Like Windsor right? I like to know How do u compare...
      • no rocket science here...i am just giving some thoughts - all qualitative
        • I c.
        • r u the real ithaca hsl?

                • u must be the windsor guy ..heh
                  • no, i am not "the...", in fact i live in MI.
    • somehow money provides freedom, in some sense

      • i know what u r gonna say...but read my last sentence 2 more times and see what u can tell me - thx :)
        • Life style, Culture? family?
          • I think, more or less, he is complaining the whether
            • He is not.....and he is complaining nothing....:-)))))))))
          • yes, these are what i thought, just by observing other peoples (民族)
          • Hence the next, more important question is: if we wanna have such an overseas place of cultural and life-style attractions with family values, for chinese canadians, what do we do and how do we build/enhance the place?
            1. toronto has been such a place, well kind of, for mainland chinese -- it is obviously more for HK-based cantonese speakers, as lots of social infrastructure have been built by wealthy HK tycoons and folks. i don't expect anything similar happening with lots of mainland tycoons pouring into this place, etc. so i think, the best way for us is to get closer to HK folks, get to know more about their culture and language (i've seen the same trend from the other direction) and this way, we can be better off. just imagine -- if we cant even interact well with HK people here, who are of the same origin, how can we live better in a more general, multi-cultural environment?

            2. not to conflict too much with other ethnic cultures in the same place can be a sensitive and subtle issue -- i guess we are all learning, including the canadian government, how a multi-cultural society of old/new immigrants works.

just some sunday night thoughts :))
            • I have some same thinking as yours also after coming to toronto. Now, Not many Chinese from mainland are rich , and be able to build social infrastructure. Maybe we have to give 20 years since
chinese from mainland only immigrate to canada not long time ago right? I speak Cantonese ( Ma ma dei.).But still, I don't feel madarine culture is different to Cantonese somehow. I don't think we should have difficulties to interact well with HK/ Cantonese people, just same as with other many nations. After all, toronto might be the most multi-cultural city. :-)

Just feel strong needs of speaking madarine, eating good chinese food, and killing time with Chinese folks......Is it called "Qing(1) Qing(3)"
            • I don't think there is such a big deal to somewhat get closer to HK people here. Seizing into the original HK's society wouldn't do you any good really
Besides, Chinese immigrants in Toronto are mainly from Mainland of China now. As far as I know, actually HK-based cantonese speakers are anxious to learn more about Chinese from main land so they can keep business blooming.

More importantly, standing higher, seeing further, Chinese culture is really a part of whole muti-cultures, right?
              • Just give a little bit more time! :-) and every chinese behave good (or as good as can). Talking about position in society, I think to gain respection is very important!
                • drunker, u did not get my point. its not about chinese culture being part of whole multi-cultures. also number of immigrants is not exactly the same as power of the group.
hmm, r u really residing in canada? is this a chicken-duck talk? ;)

my point is how to make it more home-like for mainland chinese -- look, there is not really a mandarin TV station, 99% if not 100% chinese supermarkets are cantonese or the like, etc, etc. basically most chinese styles here in toronto are cantonese oriented, which can take time and effort for mainland chinese, especially northern folks to get used to (yet still not feeling homey :))....yeah, i know, it takes time and people to build. but people come and go easily, either leaving for US of A or back to China. so when would the (pseudo-)home be built? -- that can be a question. :)
                  • maybe I got a wrong impression from your last message that you have the motivation to learn Cantonese otherwise you might feel being an outsider
We all know, it takes time.

those earlier immigrants have laid their foundations, they've got resouces, and they've set certain rules. Nevertheless, it will change while the structure of group changes.
        • Are you from southern China?
          • dont understand why you ask this? but i did live in both S. + N. in china. whats ur point??
            • no point! 刚才卖弄小聪明而已。。。。
              • :-))))))))))))
