I got my first license in Montreal when I worked there, and continued using it after move to Toronto by using my friend's address to deal with licensing office and insurance company over there. There was no such 2 class licensing crap in Ontario back then, I did it for insurance purpose, after my friend move to States I had to switch to Ontario license and my premium suddenly went tripled.

If you have a car, a valid driver license, license plate and insurance from other province you can drive in Ontario anytime till one of them expire. To renew you got have to provide the address that prove your residency in that province to get thing done, they only send by mail, if you have friend there it will do the trick. If you want switch to an Ontario license you have to register an Ontario address first. By doing that I think you can only use the old license for 6 month (I may be wrong) but you can go direct to road test for G license at the same time
