    • sure. medicare is free, except prescription drugs&dental care.
    • If you come to Ontario, your health plan takes effect after 3 months of your landing. During this period, you'd better buy medical insurance for your wife.
      • Thank you very much. Wonder if you have any idea how much medical insurance costs in Canada? (for a 30 year old lady for 3 months) Thanks again!
      • are you sure? I think u can apply for health card immediately after your landing, and they will give you a piece of paper which contains your information for you to use in case of medical emergency, though the card will be mailed to you in 3 months.
by the way, if she's worried about
cold or flu, I can say the chance will be very little if she doesn't make herself too tired:-)
        • Thanks zara and sailor for your concern. I'm afriad that I'm totally confused now. Can a new immigrant get free medication before getting the health card ???
In fact she's some heart problem, not serious enough to prevent her from normal work and living. But you know, ladies are usually scared by themselves...
          • you have to wait for three months
            • 非常感谢! Your information is very useful for us because we plan to land in Toronto.

Am I eligible for Ontario Health Insurance?

You must have Ontario health insurance to use Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care funded health
care services. You are eligible for the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) if:

you are a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or convention refugee, and
you make your permanent and principal home in Ontario and
you are present in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12璵onth period.

Tourists, transients or visitors are not eligible for OHIP coverage.

You pay no premiums for Ontario health coverage. Federal and provincial taxes fund health care. Your
coverage is based solely on residency and is not determined by whether you have a job or are
unemployed, or where you pay your income tax.

You and all members of your family, including babies and children, must have your own Health Cards.
Always carry your Health Card with you. You should be ready to show it every time you need services.

Am I eligible for OHIP right away or do I have to wait?

There may be a three-month waiting period for your OHIP coverage.

If you are a newcomer to Ontario, or a former resident returning here to live after being away for more
than seven months, the waiting period begins on the date you establish or re-establish residence in
            Ontario.

If you are an eligible resident moving to Ontario from another part of Canada, your former province's
health insurance will cover you for up to three months.

If you are not covered by another province or territory, it is important to buy private health insurance to
cover you until you get your Health coverage.

            For more information :

Contact a private insurance company directly or call the Canadian Life and Health Insurance
Association Inc. at 1-800-268-8099. In Toronto, call (416) 777-2344.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
