7y7, I am just curious: What kind of system is used in your company's manufacting facility in China? Is that a totally separate entity from your ERP?

Technically we use the same system. Due to some legal issues, every local operating company was setup as separate entity in the system.

Thans for the nice posts. Please continue. Which ERP you are using or have experience with? SAP, Oracle EBusiness Suite, PepoleSoft or other?

My current company uses Oracle as back end database, SAP as business application. My husband has experience with PeopleSoft.

thx for sharing, I have one question if you don't mind: whether ERP can be applied to planning engineer and if it can, how?

Many companies are using their home-growing ERP systems instead of using commercial ones, for example, Microsoft develops its own system using Siebel. Manufacturing industry has complex MC/PE/MFE/QA/QS/SALES/ACCT/IT/Machine Shop/Tooling requirements.

thx Dave, seems to me like ERP is only appealing to big companies with multi-operations. am I right?

Implementing ERP system is very expensive and time-consuming.. small companies willnot bother instead..

not really. there are a lot of companies spent half a million or so on their ERP systems, although their revenue is only in the teens. There are ERP packages other SAP, Peoplesoft, etc.

Many such packages are industry oriented, for example, distribution, retail, service, manufacturing, etc.
As far as I know, SAP does have planning function in Financial modules. But it doesn't seem to work well, too complicated to train users. Sorry that I don't know engineer side.

fair enough, the only reason I want to know is if ERP can be a tool for engineers, I will then try to convince my boss to send me to a training. Thx for your input.

I am not sure what you mean about Planning Engineer, but pretty sure SAP has Engineering Change Manage function. It is under LO module. As ERP software, it must have all kinds of planning functions such as MRP, DRP, CAP.. Check http://help.sap.com/

Using restaurant instead of family will be more appropriate because it does involve more stakeholders, parallel processing units.:-)
