If you have not call the phone company to cancel youe plan it won't stop automatically. If you have called and your phone has been disabled then it is fine. The handset is not exchangeable between different companies.

they will keep sending you that bill plus any interest. I'd canceled one cell phone.

The first payment didn't went through in their system. They'd sent me bill after bill reminding me the missing first payment. Even after I canceled that plan. Finally it was fulfilled. I called them and settled the outstanding interest charges.
