    • If you are not married yet, find a native speaking girl(boy) friend; If you are married, get a TV with closed caption function. Watch sit-coms like Friends, Seinfeld. Limit your exposure to Chinese language, like the posts on Rolia
      • I don't agree with your last sentence.
        • Just kinding. I don't have enough space to add a : ) at the end...
          • it's okay. do you just learn from egg that, change to be a guest when at home, ^_^
            • always change and be a guest at home
Oh yeah, I slip into something comfortable as soon as I get home, and let my wife do all the cooking and cleaning, if that's what you mean by "change to be a guest at home"... *_^ You got a cool highliter up there, can I borrow it? *_^
        • I think so. Your know if I post a articl in english, seldom people reply it. Hi lumlum why not propose a suggestion that the web-friend write in English.
          • At the beginning, I always post something in English, but that's just because I didn't have a Chinese system.
Personally I prefer that , just feel free to use any language to express your feeling. As long as you feel comfortable, no matter it is in English or Chinese.

There are so many ways to learn English.

It's a good way to form the logic of thinking in English. You know what, in order to practice more, I once wrote diary in English. I know, I had made some progress on using this way. But, it's not an instant way.

Later one friend who can use English very smoothly and freely tells me that, because I didn't read pure English enough, and because nobody corrected my mistakes after I wrote all the staffs, I couldn't improve my English very fast. He thought the best way was, to write English paper, after that, somebody, like a native speaker could give you advise to improve your writing skills. Then, probably you could make some prompt progress.

Just share some feeling on it. ^_^
            • thanks very much. however where is the english teacher!!! anyway good luck to you.
        • You can not emphasize too much on listening and speaking. - How I taught my wife English
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛when my wife came to Canada, her English level is Junior High in China. (Finished college level but forgot most of it ). I was an English major in China, but after arriving in Canada I found most of my undergrad efforts on reading 19 century novels has been a waste of time . I want her to learn English is a different approach. After 3 month in an ESL class, I encouraged her to enroll in an adult high school. There she interacted with a lot of native speakers on a daily basis. I taped sit-coms and movies and watch them with her, and stop once in a while to explain the plot. She also did volunteer work at a community center with kids. When she was alone at home taking care of our baby, she tunes in to CBC radio 1. She didn't torture herself with a lot readings and looking up the dictionary, but now she can enjoy the movies, talk to her doctor in English, and fill out the census form for our family. Her writing is still not good, but one interesting thing happened recently. I got a TOEFL test for her last week. After an hour she told me listening comprehension is very easy for her. Grammar is a little bit challenge but still OK - she difn't know which answer was correct but in most cases guessed it right. The most difficult parts are reading and volcabulary. Ten years ago when I took the TOEFL, my feeling was: listening is the most difficult part; never trust my "language sense" in the grammar part because it is often unreliable. You can see the difference now.

I found my approach is paying off - she just leaped over two major pitfalls in learning English. Finally I want to say to speak English well, don't treat it as a knowledge. You need to enjoy it, just like little kids enjoy their interactions with the people around them. Pretend it is a new tool you can use to reach out for that wonderful world around you, and take heart every time you make yourself understood.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
          • ur e is pretty natural. :-)
          • Good article.
          • Very good tips! This is the right way to learn English.
          • Forgive me! I doubt that rounder majored English....
            • Give me a break! I don't think that rounder majored in English...
              • Dear rounder, where did you copy that paper? The author claimed he majored English in China, but his writings disproved himself.
                • I can prove this by picking on all your previous posts but that's not the point, coz I think you wrote a lot things that are helpful to others; even IF I did copied anything, so long as it helps other friends here, so what?
            • whoops, jabber's comment DOES sound grammartically cumbersome:)
          • 写的真棒!‘
          • GREAT JOB。
          • 真不错!我现在努力想把自己改造成加拿大文盲。文盲的听说都没问题,虽然他看不了报纸,写不了报告。我现在的情况时正相反~
