  • 工作学习 / IT杂谈 / Hi,jabber,I've just arrived in Toronto . I was greatly confused after considering Canadian job market and my background, could you give me some advices? Please come in...
I have years of experience in Sco unix/C programming but it's just related to banking affair not communication and not C++. Just one year ago, I was involved in a java project about a website which is on the platform of Solaris,Oracle, JSP,Servlets,JavaBeans. From then on,I learned java and code some programs. But ,you know, iwe didn't use some hot techniques such as EJB,Corba, etc, which are usually required in most job recruting related to java. I'm learning EJB,J2EE. But I am wandering if I should do back to study unix/C++. I'm so puzzled that I need your advice. I'll appreciate any reply from you. Thanks in advance!
    • I am not in Toronto, so my advixe cannot make much sense. Come in.
It seems to me you are a decscent programmer. But your sckill set is quite small. Pure C programmers have not many opportunites. On the other hand, your Java skills are not very strong, sounds superficial. I suggest decorate yourself into a C++ and Java programmer . Probably, you need read some tutorials and run some demos from Sun's site.

      Corba is not so hot.
      • Thanks a lot, jabber. I know what I should to do depends on myself. I like java and I believe that I could become a good java programmer after hard learning and practice. But ,
you know, the java market is not as popular as last year. I am wandering if I can get an opportunity in this rough market. And I have not bad skill in unix/c while I have some knowledge of C++ . But I HAVE TO select one to pay more attention to , that's my problem: which skill should I emphasize and which one should I abandon? Thanks for your consideration.
        • I think you don't need to choose from Java and C++. They are a bit similar (so it's not so hard to be familiared with both of them for you), and your UNIX experience will also give you a lot help.
          • Thanks.
        • no offense...but if your english sucks like Jabber, I do not see to many hope for u...
you guys need to remember communication matters more as well for a programmer... spend more time to polish ur commu. skills will boost ur career path...I won't hire a programmer who could badly communicate...
      • Are there some materials on Sun's with a lot of instructive and runable examples ?? Can u show some of them ?? ThankU in advance .
        • Just some examples
          1) J2ee Pet Store Demo from Sun

          2) BEA Personal/Commerce Server

          3) IBM Websphere Commerce Suite (its dababase schema is very good!)
      • 关于java 程序员要求到多深??
        • Let me try to answer your question
Within a short time, you cannot become a guru in every field. However, you should know well the basic skills in some field. Let me say you have a thorough understanding of Jason Hunter's Servlet Programming. You have run all the code in the book. At the same time, you have tried to write your own code. Now if you go out for a job, if you happen to meet an interviewer who asks you a lot of Java Servlet and JSP questions, you may get the job. Job=skill + chance.
          • MR. Jabber, Where can I find the book, Jason Hunter's Servlet Programming. I want to study it carefully according to your advice
            • I don't think we can download it from internet. You need to buy it. On its cover is a tea pot.
            • if you want learn the java, go http://developer.java.sun.com/developer There are should the most materials you needed!
          • Jabber, Where can I get Jason Hunter's Servlet Programming? Is it a book?
          • That book is on my desk. Hi the guy upstairs, try this website: www.servlets.com
            • Egg, I got my first programmer job by learning Jason Hunter's book.
At that time, I had no programmer experiences. In one job interview, I cliamed I had done session management things. The interviewer suddenly stopped my talking and told me that session management is automatic in the servlet programming. It was a big blow on me. After a few second's pause, I concentrated myself and responded: "Yes, it is true. The servlet engine provides basic machanism for session management. However, application programmers still need to do something. For instance, we bind our shopping cart in the session, so we need to constantly manipulate on the session. " This is a horrible experience to me. But it also lends me a lot of moral support. I did not get an offer from that interview because I did not know WebLogic. After that, I began to ask myself many questions and pay more attention to the life cycle things of a project.
              • GOOD! Hope I can keep my job by this book. Could you also recommend a book to me that can let me win lotto? I just find it's much much useful than any book about servlet and EJB, hei hei hei.
                • agree. heihei...
                • Here is a solution
Egg, please spend some money in playing lottery. After you gain some exeriences, write us a book on this subject.
                  • My best record on this was that only 2 numbers out of 6 were matched.
                    • You have gone much farter than I. Keep going!
          • 我在网上找到了PDF格式的Java Servlet Programming by Jason Hunter 但
              • Edition one is obsolete, though it may be useful for veterans
              • 请问huofu哪里可以download这本书,我打不开你的帖子
                • 网址是:"http://www.mightywords.com/browse/details_bc05.jsp?sku=MWKIAM&privateLabel=false",但Jabber说是第一版,555555
                  • Of course, we should not use the first edition now. Servlet API have been evolving
