      The best way is to ask the ticket agent.

      For a technical stop, the passengers won't leave the airport terminal and no visa is required.

            that's my experience when I flied from Beijing to Detroit, then Canada. Even Beijing custom would check if you have US transit visa.

      If you need to pass the custom(i.e., like those people, who take Northwest and arrive in Detroit, have to pass Detroit's custom, no matter where their final destinations are), you need a transit visa.
      I feel most likely you have to get one since your flight is from Asia.
