    Hi.
Because of your wonderful work, this site become must-see-everyday for me.
I just arrived in Ottawa several days ago. I am very disappointed at the city for I never thought that a capital of a developed country will be so old and shabby. I almost want to go back shenzhen immediately. No need to say more, this is not the topic I want to discuss with you.
I have two years experience in Lotus notes development and got two Lotus certification: one for development, one for administration. I have several months experience in web development, mainly use asp. Since java is in these days, I taught myself and obtain a java programmer certificate. Although I have some concept in java API, jsp, jdbc, I don't have practical experience.
I start searching for job now. I found that opportunities for lotus development is rare. should I transfer to java development? Please give me some recommendation.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Your English writing is pretty good. I am so happy to see your questions.

I think you have become aware of the thorny
issue. Lotus Notes is not hot. I strongly suggest you migrate to Java. Of course, if you HAPPEN to get a lotus job, don't let it go.
Nothing is more important than holding a job
for a new immigrant, even he/she has a big sum of money in the pocket. I cross my fingers for your job hunting and I hope you have a plan for the worst.

If you are good at decorating yourself, I think you can try to hunt for ASP or Java jobs. It depends how flexible you are. In any case, don't count on Lotus. Even you get a Lotus job right now, I think you still need to migrate to ASP or Java in the future. We have to comply with the job market.

By the way, please don't complain about Ottawa. Maybe you will
      fall in love with Ottawa.

I think you are very smart. You should be able to teach yourself some advanced topics.
      • jabber, thanks for your free instruction.
Your one word is more than ten year's class.Although I just stay in canada for a few days, I can feel the pressure of life. I feel very tired because I have to use both addition and multiplication whenever I buy things. I never regard a job is so important to me like now. People can not success easily, your story give me a lot of enlightenment. I must try my best. I have to.
        • It's the trial for every new immigrant. You should feel lucky you are an IT guy.
Look into the future and everything will be okay.
        • I suggest you try to be liberal
Since you have chosen Canada, you should be able to look at it as you do at China. It is too early for you to rush into any conclusions.
You hinted the sales tax . Most Chinese immigrants cannot accept the concept of sales tax. This is an issue how you feel like things. Actually, some friends even get a conclusion that Canadian tax rate is as high as 52%. We spend money to buy commodities and services. It is not important if this money is called sales tax or has already been included in the price. In this world, there is no free lunch. In Deleware of USA, there is no sales tax; In Florida, there is no state tax(
corresponding to province tax); in Alberta, there is no prinvince tax. However, the governments has other ways to get revenues.

You are an IT professional. You are already a lucky guy. Some friends have been doing
generic work and they have little chance to have a high-pay job. Think about them...
    • You situation is just same to mine, I am not landing yet, and I know what I should do. Thanks.
