We did a 10-day self-driving tour in Mexico a few years ago.

Just as you said, you have to examine the rental car very carefully upon pickup. We made the guy marked on the sheet wherever there was a small scratch. They also examined very carefully when we returned the car.

Did not have much experience with the bumps.

On the first day, we parked in front of a bank for currency exchange. We did check around to make sure there was no no-parking sign. However, while waiting in the line, the customer behind us alerted that someone was trying to remove the license plate from our car. It was a cop. My husband talked to him a bit but he didn't explain anything, left.

Overall, the 10-day experience was much smoother than I expected. With the car, we were able to arrive in Chichén Itzá at 7am, beating all the tourist groups and enjoying our visit to the beautiful site, as tranquil as it should be.
