Stretching within current position.

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I see where the dilemma is. However there are still something you can build within your current "techincal-focused" position, just practice some little drill daily, see your progress bit by bit.

1. Many techinically strong people I have worked with are great in crunching numbers, making perfect spreadsheets, and telling a very clear thread from number to number, spreadsheet to spreadsheet. However, when it comes to communicating the work results to the supervisor, spreadsheets/numbers may not add due credit for the hard work they did. The solution is pretty easy. Whatever technical analysis you make, try to build into a simple business report format just by adding the following onto your Excel spreadsheet:

a. What is the purpose of your analysis? What issues are you addressing?
b. What are your key assumptions?
c. Show an easy thread in the spreadsheet. Make it simple and visual. A graph is more than a thousand words. Senior mgmt never bother with a page full of numbers.
d. Most important: write down your conclusion for the data/numbers you exhibited. What are the impact? Say them specifically if you can.

In this way, your manager would value your work sooooooooo much better and thumbs up your analytical skills as well as leadership potential. You are already thinking like middle/senior management, even if it is just a little spreadsheet!

2. Good leaders listen effectively, ask specific questions timely whenever they need to clarify their understanding, confirm their understanding by good paraphrasing skills after they listen to other people talk and they can usually summarize issues/points discussed in very simple but clear language at the end of the discussion, that sheds light on everyone. So, why not practicing this. For everything, you think you now need to use 5 sentences to describe clearly, aim at using only 3 sentence, then 1 setence. Focus!

3. Whatever statement you make, do not stop at just making a statement. Make no statment, make a POINT. To make a point, you need to DEFEND your statement well. Always practice saying, "The reason why I say so are...." if possible.

So, even these are not your mandate in your current position, you can still shine if you do believe you have potential. If you do not believe you have potential, then do not bother trying. You can still live a happy life in your comfort zone. It is not a senior job that makes everybody sure of happy life.

Hope this answers your question.
