Calculate what would be the purchase cost in 2014 of a shell and tube heat exchanger that has a heating surface of 800 ft2.
We know that similar heat exchangers with one quarter the heating surface would cost $4000 in 2014. We are also told that the purchase cost capacity exponent for this type of heat exchangers is 0.6 for surface area ranging from 100 to 400 ft2 and 0.81 for surface area ranging from 400 to 2000 ft2.
