I know a couple of people in the trades and they tell terrible stories about the city inspectors. There are times when the inspector comes for an inspection and if they know the person doing the work then the inspector will supposedly stay in their car, have a quick chat with the person, and sign off on the work.
I've been an independent carpenter for 40 yrs. I've watched building practices get worse and worse as builds get slammed up in record times. Materials have become second rate, workmanship forgotten. Its profit profit profit.
