一般你可以通过INTERNET或其它途径(newspapers and magazines, word -of-mouth or the public library. )查到公司的有关背景。你可以略为写一点，使雇主知道你不是随意发出简历的。
简历按道理不应该是通用的，但许多时候人们不愿意花更多的时间去准备简历，有时候版本太多搞得人无从适应。所以其实很多人总是用一份简历来应付众多公司。但是，无论如何，COVER LETTER是不应该写成通用的，一定要瞄准申请的公司来写。
信上也可以写上你最方便的电话号码和拨打时间。一定要再三检查雇主的姓名和地址。COVER LETTER不能有任何拼写错误和语法错误。

l What Instances Require a Cover LetterMy rule is - if you are not shaking hands with the hiring decision m aker and introducing yourself, then you need a cover le tter to introduce you. If you are shaking hands with th e hiring manager, you are introducing yourself verbally and requesting an interview. In this case, hand them yo ur resume without a cover letter.
On the other hand, if you are sending a resume by m ail, if you give your resume to a friend to hand in, or if you leave your resume with the hiring manager's secr etary then you are not shaking the hiring manager's han d and you need to have a cover letter enclosed with you r resume.
Cover Letters Should Be Brief and SimpleHiring mana gers only glance at cover letters. They have 50+ resume s to read out of which they will select a few candidate s for interviews. I recommend letters be 3-4 paragraphs .
Many people provide lengthy autobiographies in the cover letter. They regurgitate their resume and then so me. This is a waste the writer's and reader's time.
