One of my friends called me today. His client, laid off 18 people today, most of which have poor skills or are new hands.
My friend is a leader developer there. He lost 3 assistants, 2 Indians, one Chinese. In addition, all the managers in that company
will take 20% less salaries and won't have any bonus this year. That company has cash flow problem. If it cannot get new investiments, it cannot last until Feb 2001.
MarchFirst was a 9000-people company. It has a branch in Toronto. Two weeks ago,
it laid off 1000 people. I am in Reston, Virginia. Recently, a very famous company laid off 800 people in this area, and it is very competitive in the job market now. One project in my present client company ceased because the customer dones't want to waste more money. All the people in that group are dismissed. My project manager took some strongs hands and his Indian countrymen
from that group. But those who have no hot skills have little hope to get a job this year, because this is a holiday season.
Indeed, IT won't die in the future. No matter how bright IT's future is, it is not an easy thing for individuals to undertake the market's fluctuation. How to strive, how not to starve, ... it is not easy to think about. Take myself as an example.
