English was the language of poor people in ancient time. Even British royal family spoke French at that time. That's why English is not based on logic. There are a lot of irregularities in this language.
So, if you didn't speak English when you were young, you don't get a chance to speak English well.
I have been living in Canada for more than 2 years now. Basically, native speakers could understand my English and I could understand them quite well. But I cannot get rid of my accent. It's like a mark for me.
My accent does not prevent me from communicating with my coworkers. For a couple of times, i told joke to native speakers and made them laugh to tears.
Once, I told a joke to my coworkers in a party :
There is a young man. He has 3 kidneys. He is so proud of his extra kidney, that he often tells other people about it. One day, he met a new friend and he told his friend proudly :"Do you know we 2 have 5 kidneys altogether?"
To his surprise, his friend stared at him and said :"Why? You have only one?" haha, that guy has 4 kidneys.
All my friends laughed at hearing this joke.
There is another joke quite effective to native speakers. I tried several times, it worked every time.
I said I watched a video of a comedian. That comedian kept attacking everything of U.S President George Bush in the video.
Finally he said :"Even the name, George BUll-SHit. There was a man called George Bull-shit before, but he changed his name to George Brown later." Nobody could help laughing at this time.
Now, another funny story which proved to be working each time. But it's a bit black humorous.
A French lady was 90 years old when a lawyer came to her home. The lawyer told her :"If you agree, I gonna pay 2500 Francs per month until you die. And after you pass away, your house belongs to me." The old lady agreed, so they signed a contract.
She was happy and healthy so she kept on living. 30 years later, she was still alive at her 120th birthday. But, ... but the lawyer died.
All my friends laughed to tears at hearing this story.＜本文发表于: 相约加拿大:枫下论坛 www.rolia.net/f ＞
