Most people using Unix just needs to know how to change directory, change privileges, search files, copy and move files, MOST IMPORTANTLY, edit a file using vi, emacs or some other editors.

If you have never touched UNIX, you may get into big trouble as a programmer. If possible, practice on at least one flavor of Unix boxes.
