1st step: contact HSBC Singapore Centre( Raffles Place). Please make a appointment with Internation Banking Division representative (I left the contact No. at home. Foo, could you share with others if you having the number today? The one I gave you yesterday. Otherwise, I will let you know tonight.) They will explain to you in very detail for opening an accout with HSBC Canada. Be sure to let them know the place you will settle down. Mines was a mistake in that I didn't point out Toronto causing that they dealed with Vancouver. You may need landing paper to prove your Canadian identity.(Not a must, check with them) After receiving your account, you now can choose from follwing options:
2nd step:
option a) Transfer your funds to HSBC Canadian account by TT(Telegraph Transfer). I would prefer TT than Bank draft in that TT is faster as well as commission clearly settled when you draw it, while the commission of the bank draft is indefinite so that you will know the costs only your peer account receive the bank draft. FYI, DBS bank draft costs the least. (Around 1/8%). Of course there would have exchange rate costs you might also need to consider and compare.
option b) Open an local account with HSBC Singapore ( can be done within any branch). Once your account is open, Internet Banking service is ready to use, of which you can make use to transfer your funds to any four biggest Canadian banks via Internet. If you have finished step 1, you can transfer to HSBC Canada now. I am not sure about the commission. Don't hesistate to clarify with HSBC.
In fact, I would say that should you fly to Canada directly from Singapore, carrying your money with yourself is the best way and cost saving.
