I will buy a 1394 card for my miniDV Sony TRV17 for make VCD, although there is no PAL/NTSC problem. That's the reason that I prefer miniDV to Hi8.

miniDV is much more expensive than Hi8, though I think the video quality of Hi8 is good enough. By the way, Sony DCR-PC9E's MSRP is 1299USD. The web shopping site's price is about 1000 USD.
