Denis Coderre was appointed Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada on January 15, 2002.
Mr. Coderre is the Member of Parliament for Bourassa (Montréal).
Mr. Coderre had been Secretary of State for Amateur Sport since August 3, 1999. As such, he ensured the same rights for paralympic athletes as other athletes, and increased the Canadian budget for sports to allow the sports community a better environment in which to develop. Mr. Coderre advocated Montréal as the headquarters for the World Anti-Doping Agency, of which he was a founding member and the representative for the Americas. His other priorities have included the establishment of working groups on dispute resolution and coaching, as well as respect for official languages and the international sharing of sports expertise.
Mr. Coderre is a former President of the Quebec wing of the Young Liberals of Canada and a Liberal organizer in Quebec. A candidate in the 1988, 1990 and 1993 elections, he won his seat in the 1997 and 2000 elections. He has been chair of the Quebec Liberal Caucus since 1998.
