本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛the infamous Detroit' old-story reputation often gives people quite a misconcept of it. however i guarantee Detroit is just as ordinary as any other Metroplitan in North America. in terms of crime rate, it is no higher than Atlanta, Miami, DC, LA, .... but just adjacent to Detroit is a small city Livonia, which is ranked lowest in usa in crime rate.---so MDA is diverse, you cannot 'one bamboo stick knocks off all the people in the boat'.
it is true, the downtown is pretty 'zang luan cha', like any others. with the increase of the number of the mile northbound, the city/community becomes better and better, it is just a vicious cycle of taxation---decent people live in better coommunities, in return, they pay more local tax which is to be used for community improvements, while the poor live in bad conditions and thus less tax is going back for infrastructure.
but this is not what many of my compatriots feel. to be frank, it is not discrimination from our fellow chinese against black bros/sis, they even do not have the courage to do so---it is the FEAR FROM BOTTOM OF THE HEART toward them that makes my fellows look up to the white, down to the black. i hate this.
what on earth are some of us afraid of 'hei' bros/sis? they are no more or less than us being ordinary people--- i reside in a very good area northbound of Detroit, 1 of my neighbors is an African-origin lady, who is good as i am, btw, she drives BMW.
