as an independent contractor, you are entitled to the EI if you have worked for the same employer for more than 13 weeks

and you can apply for the EI during the 17 weeks of maternity leave and 35 weeks of parental leave . the amount of EI will be 55% of you income but can not more than 413/week, and you should also pay tax for it.
