工作学习 / English / Jabber's English Note---018Aprez Vous! Aprez vous!
After you! After you!
The very first line in this note is French, following which is its Engish version.
If we open the door for others, we may say "After you!". This sounds very polite, but it is actually sort of kidding. For instance, my manager always say "After you" when he opens door for me.
Usually, I just say "go ahead" when I open the door for others.

hi, Jabber, is it because "after you" is too formal so it sounds exaggerating and funny?

等JABBER解释一下.我问LG, 他说比较少人这么说, 比较FORMAL. 他的语法可比我差多了,主谓宾,状语从句,他都没有我清楚. 说不过我了, 就说, WE DON'T TALK LIKE THAT.

Yes, "After you" is formal. If we use it in the everyday life, it is sort of exaggerating. You have a good sense of language.
