找工笔记(2) - 四下打探

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛初到鬼地,最大的困难就是人生地不熟。所以当务之急,就是四下打探。除了同学朋友柔丽亚,
information interview是个不错的主意。大部分鬼子还是很热心的,你也顺便练练英语,认识
认识人,还有助于打消面试时的紧张感。只是要注意一点:you are asking for INFORMATION,
not JOB.

想找人information interview,当然就需要知道有哪些公司,找谁。翻黄页是一招,但是针对
性有点差,而且没有联系人的名号,容易被秘书小姐打回来。偶的体会,你不妨如此如此;

1. 通过APEGBC

因为偶有心将来申请PEng,所以CCPE的BC分支结构APEGBC便成为偶信息的重要来源。他可以
提供一些十分有用的资料,尤其是它有一个membership list外加search engine,可以很方
便地找出你感兴趣的一些人,对了,网址是:
http://www.apeg.bc.ca/members/directory.cfm

它还有一本杂志,Innovation,可以免费索取,了解了解鬼子都在干什么,有助于咱找工作。
强烈建议大家去逛逛,尤其是将来想做PEng的。APEGBC的地址在:

2. BC建筑协会(BCCA,BC Construction Association),网址http://www.bccassn.com/

BC几乎所有的承包商和建筑公司都是他的成员,可爱的是,他也有个Memebership List,列出
了所有公司的联系地址和联系人,偶最初的几个information interview就是通过他找到的。


3. Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) - BCCA的地区分部

顾名思义,地方小团体。地址在:

有一份小出版物,刊登一些本地的家长里短,资讯有限。

他也有membership list,里面有公司介绍和联系方式,相当有用。

加拿大全国性的咨询工程师协会组织是Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada(ACEC),网址http://www.acec.ca/,不妨一看。


另外,不妨学学孙猴子,眼观六路,耳听八方。路过什么工地,瞅一眼;这里大型政府工程招标要
登报声明,都谁谁谁在投标一目了然,不妨留个心眼,打个提前量。

这里networking很重要,以前上JOB CLUB培训时老师曾说:90% jobs never posted。我现在对此

        Pre-Informational Interview Research

        Meet with one person from your contact list for an Informational Interview.
        Remember that this meeting is to gain information or advice to get you to where you want to go. It should not be used as an employment interview.
        Prior to your meeting with the selected contact, take approximately half an
        hour to research the following general details:

        Company name
        Company address
        Contact person and title
        Web site
        Date company established
        Background
        Corporate culture
        Mission
        Values
        Nature of business/industry
        Product(s)
        National, International,
        Multinational
        Number of employees
        Current stock price (if public)
        Types of jobs currently available

        Sample Informational Interview Questions:
        Section 1—Industry Information
        Section 2—Company Information

        What attracted you to this type of work/industry?
        What are some of the long-term trends affecting the industry?
        With these in mind, what skills and expertise are companies looking for?
        What is your typical workday?
        Describe in your own words your company culture (example: “family-oriented,”“work hard—play hard”).
        What are the top three qualities that you look for in the candidates you interview?
        How important are “communication skills” vs. “technical skills”?
        How is the company involved in the local community?
        Who are the key competitors?
        What are the key technologies?
        Is your company positioned for growth or for profit at this time?
        Does your company use a specific methodology?

        information interview通过熟人介绍是最好的,
        但是,刚来,哪来熟人啊,就自己去找吧,
        热心的鬼子还是有的,
        我头三个电话谈成了两个,
        但后来连续几个被拒。。。。

        可以了解不少东西。
        个人以为,很有用。。。
        • 小拍真勇敢。我在国内买的书是中译本,那些Networking的技巧如果要在中国实施,我不会感到多大的困难,但是去到加拿大,确实要费一番功夫。
