MY TN STORY

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Got TN Visa in Peace Bridge yesterday. Border Officer returned everything to me, even the TN Letter. Also, they accepted Canadian Dollar credit card. So, if you like, you don't need to bring USD cash. However, when I went to SSN office in Bufflo for Social Security Card, I got rejected by a black girl who indicated that she has worked there for nine years and knew every thing. She also gave me some bullshits that I need to wait 15 days and only apply in local office.

After just saying goodbye to the black girl, I headed to Niagara Fall for another SSN office. There were very professional middle-age white guys gave me a nice shot. (I am only interested in providing what happened to me that day, no race discrimination at all here.) I got a letter indicating that the the SSN will be available after the verification, as I just applied TN the same day and the information was not yet in the system.

Conclusions:
1. Be prepared and be self-confident: Border Officer only need information for decision-making, not documents themselves.
2. If you plan to apply for SSN right after TN, go to Niagara Fall: You will be better served.

    • Thanks for sharing. I got my TN at Niagara Falls as well. If I apply for SSN, will I be getting a temporary number that can be used to fill out I-9 on first day of work?       • Some additional comments for your consideration: -beback(beback); 2007-9-20 {797} (#3945713@0)
        1. Use the letter with reference number from Niagara Fall office to your lacal office for SSN printout before receiving your SSN Card (Mine was processed for one week for the verification, and needs another week or two for the SSN Card). HR only needs SSN number for I-9 Form. However, technically you can start working without SSN number or SSN card. BTW, any number you get will the unique one assigned to you. There is nothing called temorary number for SSN.
        2. For I-94, if you drive through POEs, you don't need to yield - just show officer I-94 and say you want to keep it for I-9 form. I got this information through talking to border officers. They also don't want the trouble to take off old I-94 and issue another new one. However, if you enter US by air, you may need to yield.

      • There are many posts for this question. Basically Reference Letter is in the maximum list but not in the minimum list (Officer just checked my (1) passport, (2) TN letter, and (3) MSc. Degree). -beback(beback); 2007-9-22 (#3948631@0)
