Facing a lay-off

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I would like to share my current experiences with all the people: Waiting for being laid-off.

I began to work for my present employeer in April of 2001. Our company is a healthcare company, instead of a pure software company. However, I work in a development team to build software. Our business model is Application Service Provider(ASP), which has proved not succdessful in the market. At present, the sales are very sluggish. Our company has fired our former VP, Sales and hired a new one. Our sales report, however, is still far below from the board expected.

Our development team has 11 people. I helped to build this team. Our development activity has almost been finished. Right now, we are fixing some bugs. Whether our sales is good or not, this development team needs to be downsized. Of course, the company needs to keep DBA and a few other people to maintain the site in the normal case.

I know I will be the first one to walk out the team, because 1) I am no longer a key player; 2) My salary is high; and 3) My opinion is not always compiant with my manager's. However, I still feel very satisfied. I am just wating for that day. Right now, I am just killing time---spending 2-3 days fixing some trivial bugs. Of course, I am refueling myself for next round job hunting.

I have made up my mind to wait for being kicked off. Right now, we are not busy, so it's a good time for me to learn some new stuff. For instance, I played some examples of J2ME and got my feet wet with Sybase (Sybase is no longer a leading database, but some companies are still using it for historical reasons).
I don't leave the company myself because I wish to get that severance pay, even if it's just two week's salary.

A programmer's value exists only when he/she is needed. If he/she has finished his/her job, his/her fate is to be trashed like a well-worn jacket. I feel easy. I have cleaned up my desk and moved my books home. Most of my colleagues are relaxed. We spend long time on having lunch and try to enjoy the time we are together.

I hope my fellow programmers take it easy as we have to hunt for new jobs.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • Good luck.
    • So, try to be a System Admin or DBA, they are the last batch which would get laid off.
      • Egg, thank you for your suggetion. My personality suggests I am not suitale for DBA or Admin positions
        • 俺原来也这样想,现在不是干得好好的?给钱,稳定,啥工作都可以做。有开发背景再搞管理,非常有优势,因为你懂程序运作的内部原理。
          • I can't agree with you more.

You have IBM experiences. So I guess you have ever user Net.Commerce server, or at least have heard of it. Two years ago, as a lot of people were crazy for Java things, I manipulated Net.Commerce and wrote scripts (Now I have forgotten the name of that scripts, and IBM has also replaced those scripts using JSP in Websphere Commerce Server). My manager asked me to do that job because he thought I am easy to handle. I accepted that task because I thought that a contractor should do whatever task the client needs to do. I don't think I wasted any time. On the contrary, I think I have learnt a lot of things from that Net.Commmerce, though I have forgotten all the syntax things.

Indeed, people needs some stratics and tactics to survive in the IT market. Some people think mastering Java or Oracle can bring or guarantee them a job. That's not completely true. One needs a skill set, instead of a single skill, to be successful in the job market.

I don't worry much about my next step because I have a clear picture of job market. I know what is the selling point. Of course, I also know how to cover my shortcomings.

It seems both you and I are materialists.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
      • Really?
    • I have same experience as you. Now stay at home, and work as a contractor for my previous company. When I found it was not easy to get another, I am kind of hating the company, Don't want to help them any more.
      • I gave up hunting for a new job because ...
Simply because my wife is expecting a baby. If I get a new job and leave my present employer, it is difficult to handle my health insurance. Of course, my present employer will cut my insurance. The new employer's insurance partner, however, may not cover my wife's pregnancy because it is a "pre-existing" condition. Under such a context, my best strategy is to stay with my present employer. If it lays off me, it may continue to cover my insurance for a couple of months. Even if it does not, I can pick up my wife's insurance according to USA's COBRA law (I pay $800 per month). Delivering a baby is really money-costing. So I have to put health insurance on the toppest position.
        • US$800 per month的保险!!!确实需要好好安排~
          • Not a big deal
Once I am laid off, I will pay all the insurance premium (roughly $800) through my employer until the baby is born. I think I can find a new job without too much efforts. I may use new employer's insurance plan to cover my family. The only exception is new insurance does not cover my wife's pregnancy, because it is pre-existing.

My wife has been 5 months far along. If I am laid off today, I just need to take care of my present insurance for 5 months. $4000 is not a big deal if it is compared to the cost of delivery. So I decided to stay with present employer until they dump me. :-) :-)
        • Your situation is harder than me. Good luck!
        • Most of the employers offer so called "group insurance plan", that covers all employee and direct family member immediately without medical exam, no matter what health condition thay are in. Don't worry too much.
          • US is different from Canada. And even in Canada, you'll have to fill a form which includes the pregnancy status.
    • Good luck, Jabber, and thank you for sharing your valuable experience.
    • 俺相信你能安排好自己.祝福你.
    • Hope you can find a new job soon
    • I think that is OK, but should start to search new jobs now.
    • Software has a life-cycle, Programmer-career same thing. RELAX/LEARN NEW TRICK/GET READY FOR THE NEXT WAVE.
    • be positive. attitude is important. show ur attitude and expertise that u r worth that much money and worth staying. anyway, good luck
    • you no problem
    • ASP is proved not that successful in the current market. But I think it's still good enough for you to find another job. I saw some xSP booming news several days ago. I think that would apply to your experience.
    • It's been a long time. Take care and good luck!
    • 写得太好了,好有同感
    • Good attitude. To keep this attitude, find a contract job next time when you looking for job. So your idea always fly. never stay. To be a programmer for ever....
